Structural Repairs Made at Gaithersburg Aquatic Center

Center has been closed since January 2102.

Cracks that compromised the structural integrity at the Gaithersburg Aquatic Center have been fixed, the city officials announced Friday.

The aquatic center was closed Jan. 25, 2012 after a structural engineering firm found cracks in exterior support columns at the facility.

With the structural fixes complete, the facility will enter a second phase of upgrades and is expected to reopen in spring 2014, city officials announced.

The aquatic center—housed at Gaithersburg Middle School—was built in 1975 and is co-owned by Montgomery County Public Schools and operated by the City of Gaithersburg.

The Gaithersburg City Council voted unanimously to fund the project during its meeting Dec. 3, 2012.

Michele R. Potter, Gaithersburg’s director of Parks, Recreation and Culture told Patch in an email that the city, MCPS and Montgomery County government each contributed $300,000 to the repairs.

The city funding for the project came from its 2014 construction budget, Potter said.

The second phase of upgrades includes a new white coat for the main pool, a new filtration system, and installation of an ultraviolet disinfection system, city officials said in a news release.
