Area High Schoolers Win Scholarships

Students share in $250,000 awarded across Montgomery County.

  • Students: Stephanie Abaga, Nasra Missana, Susana Chiang, Talmo D. Pereira, Jeremiah D. Kober
  • Schools: Gaithersburg, Colonel Zadok Magruder, Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill high schools

Several area high school students were awarded college scholarships from the Broad Prize, the nation's largest education award honoring large urban districts.

Across Montgomery County, 13 high school students shared in $250,000 in scholarships given by The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, which recognize graduating seniors with financial need whose grades have improved substantially over the course of their high school career.

The award winners include Stephanie Abaga and Nasra Missana, from Gaithersburg High; Susana Chiang, from Colonel Zadok Magruder; Talmo D. Pereira, from Quince Orchard; and Jeremiah D. Kober, from Watkins Mill.

"Their achievement demonstrates the importance of setting high standards for all students and providing each student with the support needed to succeed in college and in life," Dr. Jerry D. Weast, superintendent of schools, said in a release.
