Gaithersburg Boys Fall to Sherwood

Their playoff run comes to an end.

The Sherwood boys basketball team outlasted host Gaithersburg Monday night, 55-48, in a 4A West Region quarterfinal matchup.

Sherwood advanced to play Springbrook in a region semifinal while the Trojans’ season came to a premature ending.

Sherwood was led in scoring by senior forward Archadius Rudasingwa who finished with a team-high 12 points all in the first half. Sherwood juniors Charlie Rogers and Jourdain McCants also contributed 10 points apiece for the Warriors who improved to 13-11.

Meanwhile, Gaithersburg senior Malcolm Miller scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Trojans in his final act as a high school player. The 6-foot-6 standout will take his skills to Holy Cross to play Division I college basketball next season. The Trojans finished the 2010-2011 campaign at 15-9.

The teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 32 apiece but Sherwood got a solid performance from Rogers, McCants and classmate Scott Bolen.

Sherwood converted 7-of-10 free throws in the final three minutes to distance themselves down the stretch. However, Miller’s steal and dunk gave the Trojans’ momentum and cut the deficit to 50-47 with 1:02 left.

Bolen and Rogers made some crucial free throws in the final minute to seal the victory and help the Warriors punch their ticket to the next round.

“Gaithersburg played us tough the whole three quarters,” said Sherwood head coach Dondrell Whitmore. “We must be a fourth quarter team. If we could play every quarter like the fourth then [there’s] no telling what happens at the end of the game.”
