Gaithersburg Football Star Commits to College

Simba Gwashavanhu says he will attend the University of Delaware.

The University of Delaware football program has secured a verbal commitment from Gaithersburg senior two-way standout Simba Gwashavanhu who chose the Fightin’ Blue Hens over Colonial Athletic Association rival Old Dominion.

Gwashavanhu, a three-year starter for the Trojans, received offers from both Colonial Athletic Association schools but opted for Delaware instead of Old Dominion.

Led by head coach K.C. Keeler, Delaware is a perennial power in Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) college football.

Delaware has won six national titles since 1946 and last captured a national championship in 2003 when the Fightin’ Blue Hens finished 15-1 under Keeler.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound wide receiver and defensive back visited the Newark campus earlier this year but said he plans to take an official visit to Delaware “sometime in December after the season.”

Gwashavanhu has been an integral part of the football program in helping lead the Trojans to an unbeaten 4-0 record this season. He had a key interception that halted a Springbrook scoring drive in Gaithersburg’s 9-0 victory over the Blue Devils on September 9 and scored two touchdowns in the Trojans’ 29-21 victory over Sherwood on September 16.

As a junior last season, Gwashavanhu led the Trojans in both receptions and receiving yards and finished second on the team in touchdowns.

He was described by Gaithersburg head coach Kreg Kephart as “dynamic” and “explosive.”

“He may not run a 4.5 40 [yard dash],” said Kephart, “but he’s got moves that make a lot of people miss.”

Although Gwashavanhu has already secured his college destination, the Zimbabwe native still has some unfinished business to attend to at Gaithersburg as he seeks to lead the Trojans to a state championship.

“We got close last year,” he said. “We got really close. We got a little too cocky and fell short but hopefully this year we can stay humble and go all the way.”

Things are certainly looking good so far for Gwashavanhu and the Trojans.
