Gaithersburg Lady Trojans Escape Wootton In Double Overtime

The top-seeded Gaithersburg Lady Trojans advance to the 4A West semifinals against Bethesda-Chevy Chase.

Gaithersburg High School's top-seeded girl's basketball team narrowly escaped a regional quarterfinal upset, sending home No. 8 Wootton with a 76-68 double overtime win Monday at home, The Gazette reported.

The Lady Trojans needed a three pointer late in the game's first overtime to extend the game, which ended regulation tied at 56, according to the report.

Gaithersburg, seeking its third consecutive 4A state championship, was led by junior center Janessa Fauntroy, who finished with 27 points—including the game tying three late in the first overtime—and 20 rebounds.

“We’ve fought through [tough games] all year long this year... And you see we are going to fight. We fight to the end,” Gaithersburg head coach Adrian McDaniel said, according to the report.

The Lady Trojans will face No. 5 Bethesda-Chevy Chase at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Gaithersburg in the 4A West region semifinals. The winner of that game will face the winner of the region's other semifinal matchup: No. 3 Walter Johnson at No. 2 Whitman.
