Gaithersburg State Champs Honored at Rally

Mayor Sidney Katz declared the day Lady Trojan day in honor of the girls basketball team's victory in the State Championship on March 12.

It's official: March 15 is now 'Lady Trojans Day' in the City of Gaithersburg.

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz, along with Councilmember Cathy Drzyzgula, declared it so Tuesday afternoon at a Gaithersburg High School rally held to celebrate the girls basketball team's 4A state championship title, the first in the school's history.

Katz also presented head coach Adrian McDaniel the key to the city.

"No team can win without a great coach," Katz said. He noted that the football field, the site of the rally, was named after legendary football coach John Harvill. "Today, we have another coach who's outstanding."

The team's captains and McDaniel thanked the city, school staff, and students and fans for their support throughout the season.

"It's truly a blessing [to be state champions] because these girls worked hard all year long," McDaniel said. "They're a great group of girls to work, and we're true family."

Gaithersburg also celebrated sophomore Chelsea Harris's state championship title in the girls high jump. Harris won on Feb. 24 in a sudden-death jump off, in which she and her Thomas Johnson High School opponent cleared 5 feet 2 inches and 5 feet 4 inches. Harris finally held her opponent off at 5 feet 5 inches for the win.

NOTE: Senior Sarah Seipp, who injured her right hand early in the fourth quarter of the state title game, said she has a fractured wrist. She appeared at the rally with a cast. Seipp injured it from a hard fall she took after being fouled while going to the basket. She came in with one minute left in the game and scored a 3-pointer.
