ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal disease that leads to an inability of people living with ALS (PALS) to speak, move, and eventually breathe on their own. The incidence of ALS is five times higher than Huntington’s disease, and about equal to that of multiple sclerosis.

The tournament is held in memory of George Vinall, a former resident of Northern Virginia, who succumbed to ALS in October 2006. Vinall was father to four daughters and was an avid sailor, family man, and an inspiration to all who knew him. He had an infectious personality and a positive outlook on life. Vinall was competitive in the telecom industry. Vinall moved to the DC area in 1986 where he became Vice President of Regulatory and Government Affairs for Cable & Wireless. There he founded two ISPs and served as founder and general manager of its Internet Exchange. He started his own consulting firm, International Protocol, LLC, and then joined Talk America in January 1999.

GVALS is organized and run by friends of Vinall. The Foundation is dedicated to raising money to fight Lou Gehrig’s, increase awareness of the disease, and help find a cure for ALS. To date, the Foundation has raised over a quarter- million dollars. Those interested in participating or sponsoring this year’s golf tournament can register on www.GVALS.org.

Donations from the tournament are funneled immediately into ALS- specific research and programs that are used every day by PALS. The ALS Association – DC/MD/VA Chapter provides services and support to over 510 patients within the region. These services include assistive technology devices, social worker visits, medical equipment loan closet, transportation grants, respite care grants and many other services. All of the Chapter’s services are provided free of charge to the families through generous donations and events such as the golf tournament.
