Gaithersburg Girls Best Blair 88-41

Lady Trojans tally their second highest point total of the season.

The Gaithersburg girls basketball team marked yet another overwhelming victory Friday night with its second highest point total on the season, beating Blair 88-41.

It was also the second straight game in which the Lady Trojans held their opponent to a mere two points in the second quarter.

Despite the girls' dominance in the first half of these games, they were able to maintain their intensity throughout the second halves.

Down 52-8 Friday night, Blair went on a 6-0 run to start the third quarter. Gaithersburg head coach Adrian McDaniel quickly called timeout and reproved his players for their "lackadaisical" defense. The Lady Trojans proceeded to go on an 11-0 run when play resumed.

McDaniel said the team strives "to get better each and every day and each and every game. We don't overlook any game. We take one day, one game, one practice at a time."

As usual, Sarah Seipp, and Colleen and Kara Marshall led the Trojans, but it was junior forward Jackie Jackson who was the star Friday night. Jackson led the team in scoring with 22 points and was dominant on defense. Early in the game, Jackson had two consecutive steals that led to assists. The plays were only the beginning of Blair's frustrations.

Blair was missing three of its starters due to injuries Friday night, head coach Erin Conley said. The team only had four players on its bench. Its offense was hurried and sloppy, and Gaithersburg's patented aggressive defense only made it worse.

"I think some girls stepped up" considering the injuries, Conley said. They "really came through against some good competition ... and that was impressive."

One of these was certainly junior guard Myla Sapp, who scored more than half of the team's points with 23. Sapp displayed the most hustle for Blair, and somehow managed to get the ball in the hoop despite Gaithersburg's intense pressure, which caused some very awkward shots.

Seipp scored 17 points while Colleen Marshall scored 16. Junior forward Octavia Scott, who started Friday night, also came up big for the Trojans with 11 points.

Gaithersburg played at Springbrook tonight at 7 p.m. McDaniel called their last match-up a "dogfight," with the Trojans beating them by 18 points—a relatively low difference for a team that has scored more than double its opponents' score three games in a row.
