The league encourages youths to stay active and out of trouble.

The Upper Montgomery County Passing League still continues to flourish after nearly 25 years in operation.

The league, founded in 1988 by former Seneca Valley head coach Terry Changuris, began May 22nd with a slate of games held at the Germantown public school.

Seneca Valley, Northwest, Clarksburg, Gaithersburg and Quince Orchard are among the 13 high schools represented in the league.

“It’s our version of spring football in Montgomery County,” said Seneca Valley head coach Fred Kim, who took over as league director in 2004. “We get an opportunity to get the kids out here and work on football and getting ready for next season.”

Teams from Poolesville, Damascus, Richard Montgomery, Wootton, Paint Branch, Whitman along with Frederick County’s Tuscarora and Urbana are also involved in the passing league.

Seneca Valley freshmen Calvin Reighard and Kevin Joppy made a good impression during the first week of games and could have an impact on the Screamin’ Eagles varsity squad next season.

Games are held Sunday to Friday and will continue through June 15th.

“I just think it’s a great thing,” said Kim. “It’s another way to keep kids off the streets.”
