Report: Gaithersburg Giants Join Cal Ripken League

The summer league college baseball team leaves the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League for the more prestigious Cal Ripken League, The Gazette reported.

The ping sound from contact with a metal baseball bat is gone for the Gaithersburg Giants, replaced by the crack of a traditional wooden bat, thanks to a recently announced league change.

The city's summer college baseball team announced its move to the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, abandoning the only league it has played in — the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League — since the team's formation in 2006, The Gazette reported.

The Giants join local teams the Bethesda Big Train and the Rockville Express in the CRCBL, according to the report. The Gaithersburg team still plans to field a second team in the MCBL
