Sports Report: Gaithersburg Schools Start Slow In State Tournaments

Boy's and girl's lacrosse and softball teams from Gaithersburg area schools struggled in the first round of the state tournament.

State title dreams ended for a number of Gaithersburg area teams in the first round of their respective state tournaments.

The boy's lacrosse, girl's lacrosse and softball teams from Gaithersburg, Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill high schools posted a combined 2-3 record in round one.

No. 6 Gaithersburg High School was upset by No. 11 Thomas Johnson, 13-4. Thomas Johnson travels to Gaithersburg Friday to challenge No. 3 Quince Orchard at 7 p.m. The Cougars advanced to the regional quarterfinal with a first-round bye.

No. 4 Watkins Mill hosts No. 5 Tuscarora Friday. Tuscarora defeated No. 12 Northwest 8-7 in the first round. Watkins Mill had a first-round bye.

Girl's Lacrosse

No. 10 Gaithersburg upset No. 7 Magruder, 22-15. The Trojans head to in-town rival and No. 2 seeded Quince Orchard on Saturday afternoon in the regional quarterfinal. The Cougars had a first-round bye.

After a first-round bye of their own, No. 4 Watkins Mill is set to host No. 5 Westminster Friday at 7 p.m.

Softball

In 4A, No. 5 Quince Orchard dropped No. 12 Gaithersburg, 21-19. The Cougars travel to Rockville rival Wootton High School for the regional quarterfinal.

In 3A, No. 12 Watkins Mill was defeated by No. 5 Northwood, 16-5.
