Toomer's Star Shines Bright as Gaithersburg Downs Magruder on Senior Night

The Trojans land an 8-4 victory over the Colonels

On April 30, Senior Night at Gaithersburg High School, the Gaithersburg Trojans defeated the Magruder Colonels 8-4 behind the clutch, power hitting of Senior Second Baseman Mike Toomer (#12).

After Senior Shortstop Max Heldman (#2) started the first inning with a base hit, Toomer blasted his first career homerun over the center field fence to give the Trojans an early 2-0 lead.  Senior Catcher Danny Freshley (#22) then hit a single, and his pinch runner, Senior TJ Painter (#8), later scored on a wild pitch to extend the Trojans’ lead to 3-0 after the first inning.

In the second inning, Senior Center Fielder Zack Fetters (#15) walked and then stole second base.  Toomer then hit a single to score Fetters and push the Trojans’ lead to 4-0.  Freshley then hit another single and both Toomer and Painter—again Freshley’s pinch runner—scored on Senior John Hallock’s single to build the Trojan lead to 6-0 after two innings.

The Colonels got on the board with two runs in the top of the third inning to cut the Trojan lead to 6-2.  But, the Trojans answered when Senior Outfielder Gunnar Dillon (#13) and Fetters reached base on a single and a bunt respectively, and Heldman then hit a beautiful sacrifice bunt to score Dillon.

In the top of the fourth, Senior Pitcher Billy Cullen (#17) once again showed off what may well be the best pick-off move in Montgomery County by catching a Colonels’ runner at first, helping to preserve the Trojans’ 7-2 lead.

The Colonels scored two runs in the top of the fifth, cutting the Trojans’ lead to 7-4.  But, Freshman Pitcher Nick DeCarlo (#9) relieved Cullen and quickly shutdown the Colonels’ rally.

Toomer hit another single in the bottom of the sixth inning and later scored again to increase the Trojans’ lead to 8-4 after six innings.  In truly stellar effort, Toomer either batted in or scored 5 of the Trojans’ 8 runs.   DeCarlo shut the Colonels down in the top of the seventh, bringing a close to the Trojans 8-4 win.

The Trojans improved to 11-6 on the season.   After the game, the kids from both teams who previously played together in the Montgomery Village Mavericks youth league program gathered with their former coaches, Mike Toomer Sr. and Brian Hester.
