Two Gaithersburg Natives Selected In MLB Draft

Kevin Brady and Jimmy Reed were picked by the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees, respectively, in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Two Gaithersburg natives will have the opportunity to sign with big league clubs, as the pair was selected in last week's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft

Kevin Brady, a Clemson University pitcher and former standout, and Jimmy Reed, a University of Maryland pitcher formerly of St. John's College High School, were selected by the Philadelphia Phillies (10th round, 338 overall) and New York Yankees (21st round, 667 overall), respectively.

For Brady, the experience is nothing new. The class of 2008 flamethrower was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 44th round of the 2008 draft but opted to attend college instead of signing. .

Reed, who will head to the Cape Cod league for summer ball, was a first-time selection. 

Both players have collegiate eligibility remaining if they do not sign with their Major League organizations.

The pair was joined by two other Montgomery County natives—Nick Routt of Silver Spring and Matt Bowman of Chevy Chase—as Major League draftees.
