Photo of the Day: Clowns at City Council

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz issued a proclamation designating Aug. 1-7, 2012 as "International Clown Week" in the City of Gaithersburg.

Members of the Gaithersburg community were greeted by an unfamiliar group of faces upon entering the city council chambers at City Hall Monday night. The usual city officials and residents were joined by a group of clowns -- costume, makeup and all.

The clowns, from Silver Spring's Kapitol Klowns, were on hand to receive a proclamation from mayor Sidney A. Katz, declaring Aug. 1-7, 2012, as "International Clown Week" in the city.

According to city documents: "In 1970, at the behest of Clown of America International, Maryland Representative Edward Garmatz, who served from 1947-1973, introduced legislation, signed by President Nixon declaring Aug. 1-7 National Clown Week.
