Creative Enlightenment through Art Creation

Creative Enlightenment through Art Creation

To be an artist, you have to be first and foremost true to yourself. You have to let go of your fears so your artwork will come out honest, purposeful and meaningful. The artist has to enter some sort of zen stage while creating the art so that the process of making art can make the transition from one point to another. It is after all a creative journey - at least it is for me! And, I do advice anyone who is interested in the art field to embark on that creative journey of self knowledge that leads to growth and eventually creative development that brings one to a higher creative enlightenment.

Lately, I've been working on the female portrait and figure theme. I do consider myself a figurative artist, and I love very much making figurative artwork that expresses the mood and emotion of the person. With the latest portraits, I have taken matters a little further. I looked around and said how about doing something different, use myself as a model for me. Through using my face as a transition point, it becomes a vehicle for many works of art to come. By utilizing my portrait as a start, I am actually not trying to make an actual resemblance of myself rather use my features as a starting point that leads from one artwork to another. This is how I mainly work. I start with a theme and develop on it. In other words, see where that one theme and its variations take you.

The inspiration point for the current theme started in Halloween, a photo of myself with a blue wig was the source of inspiration. Actually, the photo made me look like a different person. I took this photo and started initially in a playful manner making multiple sketches with different mediums such as oil pastels then Watercolor. I worked on these sketches during my art classes. Many of my students saw these sketches and their progress, loved the new work and encouraged me to continue within this line. Hence, it is my current composition. These portraits led me to research further portraits and continue working within the figurative theme.
