Volunteer Center Gets Grant

State awards aid to increase volunteerism in the county

Calling all volunteers!

Montgomery County will be ramping up efforts to recruits local volunteers after receiving a $25,000 grant that will allow the county's Volunteer Center to help recruit and retain volunteers.

A new initiative called "Pledge 25" encourages residents to contribute 25 hours to volunteering in their communities between Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January and Make a Difference Day on Oct. 22.

The Montgomery County Volunteer Center was only one of six throughout Maryland to receive the special grant, which was administered through the state. The funds orginiated with the Corporation for National and Community Services Volunteer Generation Fund.

In a prepared press statement, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett said the grant will go far to help the center's efforts.

“Many among us are willing to help,” said Leggett, “and this grant will greatly enhance the ongoing efforts of our Volunteer Center to attract new volunteers and retain the ones who are already serving in countless capacities.”
