Gaithersburg News Briefs: City Businesses & Organizations Honored For Green Practices, Active Aging Expo Announced, Golf Tournament

The city of Gaithersburg released the following news: Innovative, Sustainable Green Practices Recognized with Gaithersburg Environmental Awards As part of Gaithersburg Green Week, the City of Gaithersburg presented Environmental Awards to individuals and organizations demonstrating outstanding environmental stewardship in the Gaithersburg community, with the goal of inspiring others to pursue similar efforts.  The awards were presented by Mayor Sidney Katz and members of the City Council at a ceremony held Tuesday, April 2, at City Hall.  The Environmental Affairs Committee selected 10 award winners and 2 certificate of recognition recipients, including businesses, nonprofit and faith-based organizations, schools and youth organizations.  …

First Lady Hosts Watkins Mill Students for Jackie Robinson Film Workshop

So a visit to the White House Tuesday for an interactive teaching event with First Lady Michelle Obama and the stars of the new Jackie Robinson biopic, “42,” was especially poignant. “I love the game of baseball. It’s always been in my life... and the film really does inspire me to play as hard as I can and keep at it and never give up,” Roberts, 18, said after the event. Report: Three Local Football Stars To Play In Big 33 Classic All-Star Game

Quince Orchard head coach Dave Mencarini will serve as an assistant coach in the game, The Gazette reports.

Quince Orchard High School star linebacker Marcus Newby has one game left to play before leaving the Cougars for Lincoln, Neb.  Newby is among five Montgomery County football players selected to participate in the Big 33 Classic, a Pennsylvania-based all-star game scheduled for June 15, The Gazette reported. Newby is committed to the University of Nebraska. Quince Orchard head football coach Dave Mencarini will serve as an assistant coach in the game, which features players from Pennsylvania against players from Maryland.
