Forty-two percent of people asked have an unfavorable view of the very hip, says a new poll.
A poll released by Public Policy Polling shows that a large percentage of Americans (42 percent) have an unfavorable opinion of “hipsters,” a group of men and women “unusually aware of and interested in new and unconventional patterns,” according to Merriam Webster. The Urban Dictionary says members of this subculture are “typically in their 20s and 30s” and “value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, indie-rock” and “witty banter.” Locally, data from the 2010 Census shows that only 19 percent of Montgomery County’s population is between the ages of 20 and 34. According to a finding from the Marchex Institute, those are some questions Marylanders might use to rationalize the institute's recent findings: We curse and act impolitely on consumer telephone calls. Whether that says anything about Marylanders as a people is between you and your robocaller, but it's statistically true, according to the institute - only Ohio had more cursing measured on more than 600,000 phone calls from the past 12 months. New locomotives could put $300 million in electricity back on the grid.
Amtrak plans to replace a total of 70 locomotives on its Northeast Regional line, which transports passengers between Newport News, VA, and Boston, MA, according to the dcist website. Trains on the popular route, which often involve long lines of waiting commuters at DC's Union Station, are pulled by locomotives that are more than 25 years old and feature outdated technology, according to the article. The Powerball jackpot for Saturday's drawing has been raised to become the largest Powerball jackpot in U.S. history. Due to strong sales, the jackpot for Saturday was raised from $550 million to $600 million, with a $376.9 million cash option. No ticket has had the winning numbers for the past 13 drawings—since early April, according to a Maryland Lottery news release.
