2013 Oscar Nominations Have Definite DC Flavor

Nation's Capital features prominently in three Best Picture nominees.

Three Academy Award nominees for Best Picture prominently feature Washington, DC: Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and, of course, Lincoln. While serving as a location for major films is nothing new to Washington, DC, I can't think of another year in which so many DC-centric movies have been nominated. The Washington Post described each movie as "an engrossing, superbly crafted story that plunges viewers into otherwise opaque and unknowable worlds made distant by time, secrecy or both" and believe film attendees will be pleased that the films "enthusiastically celebrate institutions more often mired in dysfunction and public malodor." The city of Gaithersburg released the following information this week: Sweet Family Fun at Kentlands Mansion Cupcake Class Kentlands Mansion invites parents and kids to a Mommy/Daddy and Me Cupcake Decorating Class on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. Taught by Bella’s Sweet Treat, families will learn kid-friendly, step-by-step piping, icing and decorating tricks to create their very own tasty masterpiece.  This event is open to children ages 5 to 12 and their parents. Photography and Watercolor Exhibit on Display at Arts Barn

The gallery is open from Nov. 21, through Jan. 21.

The Arts Barn is preparing to launch a new art exhibit, just in time for the holiday season. The city of Gaithersburg presents an exhibit featuring the photography of Howard Clark, Phil Fabrizio and Richard Weiblinger, and watercolors by Vian Shamounki Borchert and her students at the Arts Barn Gallery, from Nov. 21, through Jan. 21. Per the city: Howard Clark was a travel photographer for a 10-year period ending in early 2011, with a digital archive covering no fewer than 15 cities in Asia, 30 cities in Europe, and countless locations across the United States and Canada. Gaithersburg Arts: City Announces Three Galleries Debuting in September

Gaithersburg announces new art galleries at the Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion and the Activity Center at Bohrer Park.

The city of Gaithersburg announced Wednesday three new art collections will be hosted at the Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion and the Activity Center at Bohrer Park that will debut in September. The following information was provided by the city of Gaithersburg: “Paintings and Portraits” at Activity Center Gallery The City of Gaithersburg presents "Paintings and Portraits" in oil and pen and ink by Carol Hill Read and Alexy Zoob. This multi media exhibit runs from Sept. 14 to Nov. 12, 2012, at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park.
