Cal Ripken to Deliver 2013 UMD Commencement Address

Baseball's 'Iron Man' will speak to nearly 7,000 graduates at the May 19 ceremony.

  Baseball legend Cal Ripken, Jr. will deliver the 2013 commencement address for the University of Maryland, administrators announced Tuesday. The "Iron Man"—best known for playing a record 2,632 consecutive games with the Baltimore Orioles—will speak to nearly 7,000 graduates plus family and friends at the May 19 ceremony. “I hope that my life experience allows me to impart some wisdom and give [graduates] a message that will serve them as they start their careers," Ripken said in a statement. "While I never attended college, opting to pursue my baseball career after high school, I have great respect for higher education and the great value it brings to young people," he added. Baseball Great Cal Ripken's Mother Abducted in Maryland, Released

Aberdeen, MD, resident and Ripken family matriarch Vi Ripken was taken from her home Tuesday.

Aberdeen resident Violet Roberta Ripken is safe at home after she was abducted from her home Tuesday morning, police said. Aberdeen police spokesman Lt. Fred Budnick told Patch Wednesday there was no indication the matriarch of the Ripken family was specifically targeted and that a motive was under investigation. In a statement, Aberdeen police said a man armed with a handgun—described as in his late 30s or early 40s wearing a light colored shirt, camouflage pants and glasses—forced Ripken into her own vehicle between 7-8 a.m. Tuesday. Aberdeen police received a call from Baltimore County police around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday regarding a suspicious vehicle in the Ebenezer Road area of Essex.
