Thanksgiving Food Donation Opportunities in Montgomery County

Help a neighbor in need this Thanksgiving by donating food.

The Montgomery County Volunteer Center is seeking donations to help create Thanksgiving baskets for county residents in need. Items sought include: Donations will be accepted at A Wider Circle, located at 9159 Brookeville Rd. in Silver Spring, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. between Nov. 1 and 20, 2012. Catholic Charities of DC is looking to help feed low-income Montgomery County residents this Thanksgiving. Brides Against Breast Cancer 'Nationwide Tour of Gowns' to Stop in Metro Area

Nonprofit group sells donated wedding gowns to benefit people impacted by cancer.

  Brides Against Breast Cancer, a national nonprofit group that sells donated wedding dresses to benefit people impacted by cancer will make a stop in the area from September 28-30 at the Dupont Circle Hotel in Northwest Washington, DC. Since 2002, Brides Against Breast Cancer has been actively selling gowns and makes upwards of 70 yearly stops on the “Nationwide Tour of Gowns.” More than 1,000 gowns, donated by individuals, organizations and companies, will be available for viewing. Priced from $99 to $799, the name-brand and designer gowns are valued as high as $8,000. Businesses of all shapes and sizes donate to charity, often giving to large, name-brand organizations with big marketing budgets. Everyone can rally around the fight to cure cancer, help kids in need or support victims of natural disasters, and all of these things are very worthy and important causes. Kentlands Restaurant Raises Money for Wounded Soldiers

O'Donnell's Seafood raised over $1,000 for the Combat Soldiers Recovery Fund, according to the Gazette.

A Jan. 27 fundraiser hosted by O'Donnell's Sea Grill raised over $1,000 for the Combat Soldiers Recovery Fund, according to a report by The Gazette. More than 300 people dined at the Kentlands restaurant, benefiting wounded soldiers across America. "The fund is a nonprofit organization founded by Garland Miller of Chevy Chase that was established to provide funds for wounded soldiers," according to the report. Miller told The Gazette O'Donnell's agreed to donate 15 percent of sales from that night to the organization, and while the total is unclear, Miller said at least $1,000 was raised from organization buckets at the bar.

Cyclists Roll 320 Miles for Wounded Warriors

The group of 55 riders—which originated in Gaithersburg—will pedal from Pittsburgh to the DC suburbs to raise money for Operation Second Chance, a non-profit that helps wounded soldiers readjust to civilian life.

What has 110 wheels, legs of steel and a heart of gold? The group of cyclists participating in the 10th annual Ride Allegheny—a four-day, 320 mile ride from Pittsburgh to Gaithersburg. That's right. Pittsburgh to Gaithersburg. Between Oct. 6 and Oct. 9, a group of 55 cyclists will make their way along a series of trails and the C&O Canal, until they finally pull into Smokey Glen Farm in Gaithersburg.
