NASA Finds Holiday Ornament Nebula

Planetary nebula called NGC 5189 that looks a lot like a glass-blown holiday ornament.

  Do they celebrate the holidays in space? Looks like it. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured a nearby planetary nebula called NGC 5189 that looks a lot like a glass-blown holiday ornament with a glowing ribbon entwined.

Maryland Encore Chorale Offers Free Holiday Concert

The fastest-growing and largest choral program in the U.S. for older adults, Encore Chorale, will perform a free holiday concert in Silver Spring on Dec. 16.

  All are welcome to attend The Maryland Encore Chorale Holiday Concert, featuring the nation’s largest choral program for older adults. The free concert will be held Dec. 16 from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Cultural Arts Center in Silver Spring. The concert will showcase 175 performers from the Maryland Encore Chorales of Schweinhaut Senior Center, Asbury Methodist Village and Washington Conservatory of Music. The singers will sing mostly secular tunes, including an interpretation of the “Hallelujah Chorus” and “Alleluia Brasileira” by Ralph Manuel. They will also perform “Hanukkah, the Season of Light,” “The Twelve Days After Christmas” and “Christmas Goes Classical,“ a song that combines holiday words with orchestra and opera tunes. …

Santa Returns to Gaithersburg’s Jingle Jubilee

The festivities take place at the City Hall Concert Pavilion in Olde Towne on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, beginning at 6 p.m.

Santa Claus is coming to town. Gaithersburg will kick off the holiday season with Jingle Jubilee, a traditional tree lighting ceremony, with holiday music performances featuring the Gaithersburg High School Holiday Ensemble Band and Pritchard Music Academy, and a visit from Kris Kringle himself. Hot chocolate, hot apple cider, coffee and kettle corn will be sold at the event by the Gaithersburg Student Union, with proceeds benefitting Autism Speaks. The event is free to the public and starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, at the City Hall Concert Pavlion. Should the event be cancelled due to inclement weather, the tree lighting only will take place on Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.

Gaithersburg Launches 2012 Holiday Giving Program

Gaithersburg's holiday giving program aims to help as many as 800 families in need of assistance during the holiday season.

With as many as 800 Gaithersburg families in need of assistance during the holiday season, the city of Gaithersburg is again coordinating a holiday giving program, hoping to make Thanksgiving and December holidays more joyous for all families, the city announced Wednesday. The program is in conjunction with representatives from Calvary Pentecostal Ministries Church, the Gaithersburg Coalition of Providers, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and Grace United Methodist Church, and works with the countywide holiday giving program to ensure non-duplication of services. Individuals, businesses, congregations and other groups can help by providing monetary contributions or Target gift cards in denominations of $10 and $20, according to the city. The…
