Gazette: Avalon School Nixes Move to Clarksburg

The private school for boys will stay in Gaithersburg

Due to financial woes, The Avalon School will not move forward with plans to build a new campus in Clarksburg, school officials told The Gazette. The Avalon School, a Catholic private school for boys, will continue to operate out of First Baptist Church of Gaithersburg. In 2007, the school was granted a special exception to build on a 10-acre site on Frederick Road (Rt. 355). The site would have been composed of four buildings to accommodate 600 students, according to county planning records. But a sharp drop in enrollment and the failure to secure a construction bond made it "impossible" to repay a $2.2 million loan, school president Richard McPherson reportedly told The Gazette. Crime Summary: Germantown Burglary Leads to Three Arrests

The following arrest information was supplied by the Montgomery County Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Three men were arrested following reports of an alleged residential burglary in the 20400 block of Frederick Road in Germantown around 11:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. Arrested were: A commercial burglary was reported in the Oak Mills Apartment Complex office storage room in the 20000 block of Frederick Road in Germantown. Police said the burglary occurred between 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12 and 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. A residential burglary was reported in the 23300 block of Rainbow Arch Drive in Clarksburg between 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 and 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11.  A residential burglary was reported in the 18800 block of Bent Willow Circle in Germantown, around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. I'd really like to know more about crimes in Germantown. I guess its like seeing a car accident, its terrible, but everyone wants to see and know more while its happening. I really wish that we'd get the names and pictures of those who are arrested. I'd also want to know more about them. Did they grow up in the area, do they have jobs in the area? Pedestrian Struck by Truck on I-270

Man transported to hospital with traumatic injuries; portion of highway closed

A pedestrian was struck by a truck traveling south on Interstate 270, near Old Hundred Road in Clarksburg. The victim, an adult male, may have been tending to a disabled vehicle. He was transported to the hospital with traumatic injuries, according to Cpt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service. Garcia said rescuers were dispatched at around noon. Montgomery County Police and Maryland State Police were investigating the incident. A portion of the highway was shut down, though as of 1 p.m. southbound traffic appeared to be moving slowly, Garcia said. Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

Alleged Cab Robbers Arrested

Montgomery County Police accuse the men of using a Taser-like device to rob cab drivers

Three men were charged with assault and robbery for using a Taser-like device to rob cab drivers in Clarksburg and Rockville, Montgomery County Police said Tuesday. The suspects — Jamel Lamar McInnis, 18, of the 13100 block of Commodore Lane in Clarksburg; Brandon Eugene Addison, 21, of the 7500 block of Filbert Terrace in Gaithersburg; and Kevin Olaniyi, 20, of no fixed address — were charged with one count of armed robbery and one count of first-degree assault, Montgomery County Police said. According to police, 5th District officers responded to Sutler Square Terrace and Brewers Tavern Road in Clarksburg for a report of a robbery at 1:15 a.m., Jan. 10.
