Photo of the Day: Clowns at City Council

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz issued a proclamation designating Aug. 1-7, 2012 as “International Clown Week” in the City of Gaithersburg.

Members of the Gaithersburg community were greeted by an unfamiliar group of faces upon entering the city council chambers at City Hall Monday night. The usual city officials and residents were joined by a group of clowns -- costume, makeup and all. The clowns, from Silver Spring's Kapitol Klowns, were on hand to receive a proclamation from mayor Sidney A. Katz, declaring Aug. 1-7, 2012, as "International Clown Week" in the city. According to city documents: "In 1970, at the behest of Clown of America International, Maryland Representative Edward Garmatz, who served from 1947-1973, introduced legislation, signed by President Nixon declaring Aug. 1-7 National Clown Week.   "Issuing this proclamation will remind the citizens of Gaithersburg …

Here Come the Klowns

Kapitol Klowns to entertain at the Water Park tonight as part of Clown Week.

Do you need a good laugh? You might want to make your way to the Gaithersburg Water Park tonight and catch an appearance by the Kapitol Klowns. That's right, that same group of funny folks you might have seen marching in the St. Patrick's Day parade or the Labor Day parade will be goofing around at the Water Park tonight from 5 to 7. Kapitol Klowns are the second oldest "alley" in Clowns of America, International, a national clowning organization. They celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2009. The show is part of National Clown Week, which runs the entire first week of August. National Clown Week was founded on Aug. 2, 1971 with a proclamation by—no kidding—President Richard Nixon.
