Gaithersburg officials and residents got their first inside look at the new Crown Development.
It may have looked like a normal Gaithersburg City Council work session. City officials and residents gathered as usual at city hall. But their meeting room was a bus and their agenda was a look into the future -- to a time when developers envision a community park, a new school, homes, boutiques and fine dining along Sam Eig Highway and Fields Road, opposite Washingtonian Center and Rio. The regularly scheduled Gaithersburg mayor and city council meeting will not be held.
The Gaithersburg mayor and city council will venture outside the City Hall council chambers Monday evening instead of holding its regularly scheduled meeting. Joined by city staff, media and public residents, members of the city council will take a bus tour of the Crown Farm Development, hosted by lead developer Sunbrook Partners, Inc. A 20-acre section of Gaithersburg's Crown Farm has been sold for $28 million to developers, according to the Washington Business Journal. JBG Rosenfeld Retail and the Bozzuto Group purchased the site—11 percent of Crown Farm's approximately 180 acres—for the development of Downtown Crown, "a mixed-use project slated to include a Harris Teeter-anchored retail center and nearly 540 apartments," the report states. The Crown Farm property is located east of the intersection of Diamondback Drive and Sam Eig Highway, south of the portion of Fields Road located within the corporate limits of the City of Gaithersburg, west of Omega Drive, and north of the current terminus points of Diamondback Drive and Decoverly Drive, according to Crown Farm …
