WaPo: Adam McLean, a sophomore transfer defensive lineman, has received scholarship offers from three prominent Division I football programs.
Adam McLean has gone from one Gaithersburg school to another, and he's taking a strong football pedigree with him. The former Avalon School defensive lineman will play for Quince Orchard in the fall, and he's already received a number of scholarship offers, The Washington Post reported. Florida State, Nebraska and Virginia Tech have all made offers to the 6-foot-2, 260-pound standout, according to the report. Scouting service Rivals.com reports McLean has also received interest from Georgia, Maryland, Missouri, NC State, Ohio and Rutgers. Quince Orchard High School star linebacker Marcus Newby has one game left to play before leaving the Cougars for Lincoln, Neb. Newby is among five Montgomery County football players selected to participate in the Big 33 Classic, a Pennsylvania-based all-star game scheduled for June 15, The Gazette reported. Newby is committed to the University of Nebraska. Players from Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill high schools signed letters of intent Tuesday to continue their football careers in college.
Football players from two Gaithersburg area high schools made official their college choices Tuesday, signing national letters of intent to play football at their respective destinations. Maryland 4A division runner-up Quince Orchard had five players commit to football programs, including star linebacker Marcus Newby, who heads to Nebraska. Other Quince Orchard commitments include Kieran Gregory (Richmond), Andrew Ankrah (James Madison), Matt Choi (Monmouth) and Tyrell Williams (Georgetown), head coach Dave Mencarini said. Watkins Mill High School featured a lone commitment, Quinton Littlejohn (Stony Brook), according to head coach Kevin Watson. Two Gaithersburg coaches are finalists in The Gazette's "My Favorite Coach Contest." Quince Orchard High School's Dave Mencarini, head varsity football coach, and Todd Garner, varsity swimming and diving coach, are among the finalists for boy's varsity coaches, joining coaches from James Hubert Blake, Clarksburg, Paint Branch, Sherwood and Northwest High Schools. The contest also named finalists for boy's junior varsity, girl's varsity and junior varsity coaches, although no other Gaithersburg area coaches were named finalists. The narrative is the same each week: two Gaithersburg-area high schools win big while another falls in dramatic fashion. Northwest 31-Gaithersburg 21 Paced by running back Soloman Vault's three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving), Gaithersburg managed to build a 21-7 halftime lead over rival Northwest on Saturday afternoon, but the tide shifted in favor of the Jaguars in the second half. Junior quarterback Mikey Murtaugh suffers torn ligament in his right knee against Paint Branch, The Gazette reports.
Quince Orchard's attempt to return to the Maryland 4A state championship game took a big hit Monday as an MRI revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the right knee of junior starting quarterback Mikey Murtaugh, The Gazette reported. Murtaugh was injured on the Cougars' opening drive of Friday night's 34-0 win over previously unbeaten Paint Branch. The quarterback was replaced by junior Tobin Pagley, who rushed for two touchdowns and threw one more. Quince Orchard coach Dave Mencarini told Patch after the game he believed Murtaugh's injury to be serious, and Monday's procedure confirmed the worst.
