Diamond Elementary Fourth Grader Selected As Gaithersburg Junior Mayor

Jacob Levine of Diamond Elementary School has been selected as Gaithersburg’s Junior Mayor for 2013.

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz is about to have some company on the dais. Fourth grader Jacob Levine of Diamond Elementary School has been selected as Gaithersburg’s Junior Mayor for 2013, the city announced. Levine was one of six finalists invited to City Hall for a video interview out of the 166 entries submitted by City of Gaithersburg fourth graders, according to a news release. When asked during his interview to give an example of a challenge young people in Gaithersburg face, Levine indentified hunger as an issue for some city families and working with local businesses to create more jobs as a possible solution. CC! Week: "Adult Heroes in OUR Community" Essay Contest Winners (Pt. 1)

As part of National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week in Gaithersburg, Patch shares the winning essays of the 2012 “Adult Heroes in OUR Community” essay contest.

As part of Gaithersburg's "National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week" celebration, elementary and middle school students participated in an “Adult Heroes in OUR Community” essay contest. Participants wrote about someone who has had a positive, personal influence on their lives related to one or more of the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, citizenship, caring and fairness. Of the 135 entries, five winners — all Gaithersburg 5th graders — were selected. Each day this week, Gaithersburg Patch will share a winning essay from the city's “Adult Heroes in OUR Community” essay contest. Monday's winner is Gisselle Cruz, of Goshen Elementary School.
