Gaithersburg Police Offer Cold Weather Safety Tips During Frigid Week

Gaithersburg police officer Dan Lane sent Patch tips for residents to stay safe and warm during this week's cold stretch.

After a weekend of unusually high January temperatures, winter weather struck Gaithersburg in force with temperatures in the teens. Gaithersburg police officer Dan Lane submitted the following tips for Gaithersburg area residents to stay warm and safe during extreme cold: Indoor Safety Heat Your Home Safely If you plan to use a wood stove, fireplace, or space heater, be extremely careful. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions as well as the home safety measures on page 3, and remember these safety tips: • Use fireplace, wood stoves, or other combustion heaters only if they are properly vented to the outside and do not leak flue gas into the indoor air space. • Do not burn paper in a fireplace. • Ensure adequate ventilation if you must use…

Report: Gaithersburg Crime Rates On The Rise

Third quarter crime rates are up from 2011 in Gaithersburg, with incidents of robbery almost doubling, The Washington Examiner reported.

Early numbers show crime rates are up in the city of Gaithersburg, The Washington Examiner reported. Police data shows crime rates are up from 1,366 total crimes last year to 1,634 this year — nearly a 20 percent increase — through September, according to the report. Robberies and aggravated assaults showed the greatest increase, with robberies nearly doubling from 34 incidents between January and September 2011 to 63 between January and September this year, according to the report. Armed robberies are up to 78 from 47 in the same period. The Gaithersburg Police Department will be hosting “Coffee with a Cop” at the Subway Restaurant located at 876 Muddy Branch Road on Friday, Jan. 18.

The Gaithersburg Police Department will be hosting “Coffee with a Cop” at the Subway Restaurant located at 876 Muddy Branch Road on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, from 8 to 10 a.m.  This is an opportunity for citizens to speak with officers in a casual atmosphere with no formal agenda. Gaithersburg Urges Businesses To Be Safe Following Recent Robberies

A string of commercial robberies in Gaithersburg led police to issue a series of tips for business owners and employees to stay safe.

Following a series of incidents, including two armed robberies and an attempted armed robbery of Gaithersburg businesses, city police are offering tips for business owners, employees and customers to stay safe. Police recommend: On Nov. 27, officers responded to the CVS located at 546 North Frederick Avenue for a report of an attempted armed robbery. Montgomery County police released a photo of the victim hoping someone can help identify him. On Dec. 2, and Dec. 5, officers responded to the Subway located at 876 Muddy Branch Road for an armed robbery.

City, County Police Arrest 13 In Holiday Sting at Lakeforest Mall

Gaithersburg and Montgomery County Police Departments conducted a two day “Holiday Safety” initiative at Lakeforest Mall.

Plain clothed officers from Gaithersburg and Montgomery County police departments arrested 13 people during a two day "Holiday Safety" intitative at Lakeforest Mall, police said Monday afternoon. The initiative, conducted on Nov. 23 and 24 in partnership with mall security, resulted in four people being charged with misdemeaner thefts, three charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia, one charged with possession of alcohol, two had outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court, and three were charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance.  “We appreciate the efforts and support of the Gaithersburg police and the Montgomery County police departments during the busy …

Gaithersburg Police Encourage Safe Driving During Holiday Season

"Safety is our number one priority,” said Chief of Police Mark P. Sroka.

The Gaithersburg Police Department has a simple message for travelers during the Thanksgiving holiday: Drive safe. “Officers will be out in force over the holiday weekend focusing on speed enforcement, seatbelt compliance, aggressive and impaired drivers," Gaithersburg Chief of Police Mark P. Sroka said. "Your safety is our number one priority." Gaithersburg police are encouraging drivers to plan ahead and be patient while traveling, not to text or make any hand held phone calls, and use a designated driver or public transportation if you find youself to be impaired. Gaithersburg Police Holds First Annual Chief's Pistol Competition

The Gaithersburg Police Department’s firearms instructors designed a combat course for the competition and the top three officers were awarded trophies.

Gaithersburg Police named its top gun Wednesday. In the first annual "Chief's Pistol Competition," featuring a combat course designed by the Gaithersburg Police Department's firearms instructors, Officer Gregg Johannesen emerged victorious. Corporal Lester Rice and Officer Jonathan Bennett finished second and third, respectively. This year, 18 officers qualified for the event based on an average of the officer’s daytime and nighttime qualifications, according to the city. “The pistol competition is an extension of an officer’s regular training,” Gaithersburg Police Chief Mark Sroka said. “Through competitive shooting, officers are given an opportunity to perform under pressure, to gain confidence so they can perform better on the street, …

The Gaithersburg Police Department gained a new officer Monday, as Larbi Dakkouni graduated from the police department training academy in Frederick, MD. Gaithersburg Police Chief Mark Sroka and Mayor Sidney A. Katz were on hand for Dakkouni's graduation ceremony.  Officer Dakkouni will be assigned to a Gaithersburg Field Training Officer for the next 14 weeks.

Two Arrested on Burglary, Drug Charges in Gaithersburg

Two men arrested after breaking into a vacant home in the 100 block of Duvall Lane.

Two men were arrested on burglary and drug charges Wednesday after allegedly breaking into a vacant home in the 100 block of Duvall Lane in Gaithersburg, according to police. Kenny Lee Austin, 53, and Eddie Nathaniel Green, 32, neither with a fixed address, were charged with 4th degree burglary, trespassing and possession of drug paraphernalia, Gaithersburg Police Department spokesperson Dan Lane said. The burglary happened at 1:47 a.m. Wednesday, according to police.

Gaithersburg Man Arrested for First Degree Assault

Hidalgo Reyes, of the unit block of East Deer Park Road, was arrested Thursday for assault first degree and assault second degree.

A Gaithersburg man faces charges of first and second degree assault in an attack Thursday in the unit block of East Deer Park Road in Gaithersburg. Hidalgo Reyes, 50, was arrested Thursday afternoon following a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation with a female victim, police said. At 3:30 a.m., Gaithersburg officers responded to the unit block of East Deer Park Road for a possible suicide. Upon arrival, police observed an adult female laying on the ground and rendered first aid until fire and rescue personnel arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Reyes is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center.
