Crews Scramble to Contain Major Gas Leak

A dozen guests evacuated from Marriot Springhill Suites on Washingtonian Boulevard; none injured.

  A major gas leak forced a dozen people to evacuate from a Gaithersburg hotel Monday afternoon as crews worked for more than two hours to contain a rupture in a 4-inch line near the Rio at Washingtonian. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue tweeted shortly before 4:30 p.m. that the leak occurred in the 9700 block of Washingtonian Boulevard, where a leak near other utility lines was allowing the gas to spread to nearby buildings. No one was injured, according to an MCFRS spokesman. More than a dozen people were evacuated from the Marriot Springhill Suites hotel, WUSA9 reported. MCFRS spokesman Scott Graham tweeted shortly before 6:30 p.m. that the repairs were “clearing soon.” Click here to watch USA9’s footage of the repairs.

Update, 12:01 p.m.: Jack Taylor of WTOP reports that the leak has been sealed and that roads and neighboring businesses have been reopened. Original article: A gas leak near the Montgomery County Airpark has forced evacuations and road closures in the surrounding area. The leak occurred Wednesday morning on Snouffer School Road at Cherry Laurel Lane. Emergency responders are on the scene. Several businesses and slightly less than two dozen people have been evacuated, according to Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman Scott Graham. Snouffer School Road is shut down in the area of TW Perry. The leak sprang from a valve line off of a transmission main, Graham said. Gas Line Struck, Building Evacuated

Workers today struck and ruptured a gas line in the 700 block of Quince Orchard Boulevard, causing one town house to be evacuated, authorities said. Washington Gas is on the scene and has isolated the leak, according to Capt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service. They will soon be shutting off the flow. One town home--building 720--was evacuated, Garcia said. Initial reports said the line was 2 inches in diameter, but that is unconfirmed, he added. A hazardous materials team was called to the scene to help monitor gas levels and determine if people in the surrounding areas were in danger. Stay tuned to Patch for updates as they develop.

GAS LEAK: Ruptured Gas Line Causes Evacuations

The 3/4-inch line was struck in front of a garden-style apartment complex on West Side Drive.

Firefighters evacuated three garden style apartment buildings this afternoon after a gas line was struck, officials said. The 3/4-inch line ruptured in front of 333 West Side Drive, according to Capt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for the County Fire and Rescue Service. Buildings 333, 335 and 337 were evacuated as a precautionary measure, he said. Washington Gas officials had arrived on scene by 2:15 and were working to shut off the flow of gas. About 45 firefighters responded to the apartment complex, which is across the street from the National Institutes of Standards and Technology campus and next to the Festival Shopping Center.

Gas Leak Threatens Shady Grove Nursing Home

Fire spokesman: There were no evacuations after a construction crew damaged a gas line.

Firefighters were keeping a close watch on gas levels in and around a Rockville nursing home after a construction crew hit a natural gas line on Wednesday morning in Shady Grove. Firefighters received a call at 9:42 a.m. of a damaged line leaking natural gas at a building under construction at 9607 Medical Center, said Capt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for the county fire and rescue service. About 40 firefighters responded to the building at the corner of Medical Center Drive and Key West Avenue and confirmed the leak, Garcia said. “The thing we’re most concerned with is a nursing home about half a block away,” he said.
