Forty-two percent of people asked have an unfavorable view of the very hip, says a new poll.
A poll released by Public Policy Polling shows that a large percentage of Americans (42 percent) have an unfavorable opinion of “hipsters,” a group of men and women “unusually aware of and interested in new and unconventional patterns,” according to Merriam Webster. The Urban Dictionary says members of this subculture are “typically in their 20s and 30s” and “value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, indie-rock” and “witty banter.” Locally, data from the 2010 Census shows that only 19 percent of Montgomery County’s population is between the ages of 20 and 34. A 60-year-old Germantown man was killed in the collision.
A 60-year-old Germantown man was struck and killed by a vehicle at the Lakeforest Bus Station on Friday, April 26, Montgomery County police said Monday. The victim, identified as Silvano Celedonio Alvarado, of the 12900 block of Walnut View Court, succumbed to his injuries on April 29, police said. Alvarado was attempting to cross Lost Knife Road near Odendhal Avenue when he was struck, police said. He was crossing Lost Knife Road from the median to the curb when he was struck by a black 2005 Lexus 300 that was traveling southbound on Lost Knife Road. FBI agent: Gilberto Valle targeted a former University of Maryland classmate, NBC Washington reported.
An alleged plot by a New York City police officer to kidnap, kill and cook a Germantown woman was foiled by the FBI, NBC Washington reported Wednesday. Gilberto Valle, 28, of Queens, NY, is on trial in a Manhattan federal court. He is charged with conspiring to kidnap women and illegally accessing a government database to research potential victims, according to the report. Kimberly Sauer, of Germantown, is a former classmate of Valle's at the University of Maryland, NBC Washington reported. Other women who prosecutors say were potential targets include a former high school classmate, two other former college classmates and an 18-year-old woman who attended Valle's high school alma mater. A 37-year-old North Potomac man was critically injured in a four-vehicle crash on Clopper Road in Gaithersburg Friday that involved a Montgomery County Public Schools bus, police said. About 1:15 p.m., Kent Behzad Karimi, of the unit block of Polk Court in North Potomac, was stopped in his black 2012 Chevrolet Equinox in the northbound lanes of Clopper Road, waiting to make a left turn into the driveway of Seneca Creek State Park, police said in a statement. Fire and rescue spokesman: One adult suffered life-threatening injuries in a collision on Game Preserve Road.
A crash involving a county school bus and several vehicles on Friday afternoon in Gaithersburg sent 10 people to the hospital, including one with life-threatening injuries, a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said. The school bus was carrying seven students from Germantown's Clopper Mill Elementary School, said Dana Tofig, a Montgomery County Public Schools spokesman. Seven children and two adults were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Assistant Chief Scott Graham, a county Fire and Rescue Service spokesman, tweeted. MCFRS: Damage surpasses $500,000
A basement fire Friday displaced a Germantown family and caused more than a half million dollars in damage, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service. At around 4:15 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a house in the 11700 block of Scarlet Leaf Circle where they battled a fire that began in the basement and spread to the home's first floor, fire officials said in a weekly incident report. No one was injured in the blaze, but two adults and five children were left homeless, said Assistant Chief Scott Graham, an MCFRS spokesman. The fire caused $500,000 damage to the home’s structure and $150,000 damage to the home’s contents, according to the incident report. The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is investigating the death of a 29-year-old woman whom anti-abortion activists allege died after receiving an abortion at Germantown Reproductive Health Services. The woman died Thursday at Shady Grove Hospital, according to the chief medical examiner’s office. The cause and manner of death was still pending. “Any speculation at this point would be premature,” spokesman Bruce Goldfarb told Patch. A downed tree along the MARC train's Brunswick Line near Gaithersburg will prevent three trains from running their normal evening route, the Maryland Transit Administration announced Thursday. The following trains will not operate this afternoon: Train 877 (4:55 p.m. departure) will operate through to Martinsburg and Train 881 will make all stops between Washington and Martinsburg, according to the MTA. The downed tree lies about 50 yards north of the Washington Grove station, WUSA 9 reported. State transit officials said more than 800 MARC passengers were delayed for several hours Thursday morning. A 12-year-old Montgomery Village girl and 14-year-old Gaithersburg girl had been missing since Jan. 23, police said.
