Update: Frederick Woman Killed In Fatal Crash Near I-270S Shady Grove Exit

A fatal accident on Interstate 270 southbound caused major delays Monday morning for commuters in the Gaithersburg-Rockville area.

(Update, 8:20 p.m.) Maryland State Police have identified Maria Durdandal, 50, of Frederick, as the driver who was killed in an early-morning, single-car crash on Interstate 270 southbound near the Shady Grove Road exit, according to an NBC Washington report. Police said the impact of the collision was so severe that portions of the concrete barrier struck by Durdandal's car broke off and landed on northbound I-270, and Durdandal was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report. UPDATE: Police: A Traffic Stop on I-270 Ended in Suicide

State police: The man shot himself after being stopped for not wearing a seatbelt.

Update, 6:20 p.m., Jan. 20: Maryland State Police have identified the driver of the Ford Focus who police said fatally shot himself during a traffic stop on Interstate 270 on Friday afternoon as a 27-year-old Gaithersburg man. The man's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, police said in a news release Sunday. (Updated 11:45 p.m., Oct. 2) An off-duty police officer helping at the scene of a crash was struck by a vehicle that slid off a Germantown off-ramp Tuesday, according to police. Montgomery County Officer Fabio Chung was on the ramp from eastbound Route 118 onto southbound Interstate 270 when another vehicle slid off the roadway and struck him and his unmarked cruiser, Montgomery County Police said in a press release late Tuesday. Police said Chung was treated at an area hospital. No other injuries were reported from the scene, police said. Pedestrian Struck by Truck on I-270

Man transported to hospital with traumatic injuries; portion of highway closed

A pedestrian was struck by a truck traveling south on Interstate 270, near Old Hundred Road in Clarksburg. The victim, an adult male, may have been tending to a disabled vehicle. He was transported to the hospital with traumatic injuries, according to Cpt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service. Garcia said rescuers were dispatched at around noon. Montgomery County Police and Maryland State Police were investigating the incident. A portion of the highway was shut down, though as of 1 p.m. southbound traffic appeared to be moving slowly, Garcia said. Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

Watkins Mill Interchange Still Early In "Engineering Phase"

State Highway Administration briefs Gaithersburg mayor and City Council on the Watkins Mill Interchange project.

Plans for the Watkins Mill Interchange project sit in a preliminary engineering phase with 30 percent of the design completed, a State Highway Administration official told the Gaithersburg mayor and City Council Monday evening. The preliminary engineering phase is part of a process with $6.67 million in funding and could take another 18 to 24 months to complete, said Randy Gray, SHA project manager for the Watkins Mill Interchange. The project initially received design approval in February 2002 and will eventually result in the completion of a link between the existing Watkins Mill Road segments over I-270, providing a new East-West connection for the city of Gaithersburg. Accidents Snarl Southbound 270

Two injured at Montgomery Village Avenue; truck fire at Falls Road clogs afternoon commute.

A pair of accidents on southbound Interstate 270 have complicated Friday's commute, with the backups spreading on local roads throughout the corridor. In the first accident, near the exit for Route 124 (Montgomery Village Avenue/Quince Orchard Road) at around 3 p.m., two people needed to be taken to a hospital, according to a spokeswoman for Maryland State Police. That accident and had been cleared an hour later. She did not have further information. Then shortly after 3:30 p.m., a garbage truck fire temporarily shut down all southbound lanes near the exit for Falls Road. That accident was still being cleared as of 5 p.m., with traffic getting by in the far right lane and the local lanes, according to the spokeswoman.

Update: DC Police Officer from Rockville Killed in I-270 Crash

Update, 11:55 p.m., Sept. 16: Maryland State Police have identified the driver who died when his car struck a fuel truck on Interstate 270 on Friday afternoon as Jelani Omar Prather, 36, of Rockville. Prather was an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department's 5th District in Washington, D.C. Prather was off duty at the time of the crash, which occurred about 12:47 p.m. on the shoulder of the northbound local lanes of I-270 between the Montrose Road and Falls Road exits, according to a state police news release. According to a preliminary investigation, Antonio Donnell Lucas, 28, of Clinton, was driving a 2008 Freightliner tanker truck when he pulled on to the right shoulder to check for a possible equipment problem.
