Gaithersburg Library Project Moves Forward
The County awarded the bid to Henley Construction, of Gaithersburg.
Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village residents who have been waiting anxiously for the Gaithersburg Library to reopen might now recognize the light at the end of the tunnel. This week the County Department of Procurement awarded the construction bid to Henley Construction Co., Inc., of Gaithersburg, for work on the $25.6 million remodel. According to a release by Montgomery County Public Libraries, construction is set to start by late fall, and is expected to wrap up in Spring of 2013. Henley doesn't list any libraries in its online project portfolio, but they're no strangers to working in Gaithersburg. Gaithersburg Has Its Own Library Once Again
Interim facility opens at Lakeforest Mall while library undergoes reconstruction
Gaithersburg area residents have their library back—sort of. A long-awaited interim library branch opened for business Sunday at the Lakeforest Mall. With library patrons waiting to get in, Montgomery County Public Library Director Parker Hamilton quickly cut a ceremonial ribbon and invited people in to start using the facility. “We really miss the Gaithersburg library,” said Judit Fehervari of Derwood, who, with her two children, was one of the first to check out materials from the 3,000-square-foot interim facility. She said she found some “easy reading” and some DVDs for the youngsters. The interim library is located on the second floor of the mall near the inside entrance to Sears. Gaithersburg Library Hinges on Referendum Vote
Temporary branch could get nixed if ambulance fees are removed from the county budget in November
Montgomery County officials are closer to establishing a temporary library location in Gaithersburg, but still have one more hurdle to jump through before plans for the site move forward. The community has been without a library since the Gaithersburg Library at 18330 Montgomery Village Ave. closed its doors for renovations on May 15. A lease for a 3,000-square-foot temporary location on the second floor of Lakeforest Mall was finalized in August and is set to open in late November. The site will house around 25,000 items, as well as a full catalog and database use. But whether or not the site opens could depend on what happens on Election Day, Nov. 2.
