Candidates Ready Closing Arguments in Deadlocked 6th District Race

Delaney, Bartlett hit the campaign trail hoping to persuade remaining undecided voters ahead of Tuesday's election.

By CARL STRAUMSHEIM, Capital News Service WASHINGTON -- With days to go until the election and a recent poll showing a statistical dead heat, Rep. Roscoe Bartlett and Democrat John Delaney are storming the 6th Congressional District to persuade the remaining undecided voters to give them the edge on Tuesday. The 6th District is the competitive exception to Maryland’s other congressional races, whose incumbents are all expected to win re-election. A Delaney win in the district, which was redrawn to favor Democrats, could help chip away at the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Should Bartlett prevail, however, he will have foiled an attempt by Democrats in Annapolis to redistrict him out of his seat. “Voters have a …

Republican Rep. Roscoe Bartlett and Democrat John Delaney met Sunday for their third debate at Temple Beth Ami in Rockville.

By CARL STRAUMSHEIM, Capital News Service ROCKVILLE—Republican Rep. Roscoe Bartlett and Democrat John Delaney on Sunday night cast themselves as political independents in the race for Maryland's 6th Congressional District during a debate that still featured the kind of partisan bickering dominating national politics. Sunday night’s event, hosted by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, marked the third time the major-party candidates in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District have debated each other. The debate drew about 225 people to Temple Beth Ami in Rockville. In their race to represent a district that stretches from Oakland to Gaithersburg, both candidates pointed to times when they had exhibited bipartisanship …

While I abhor the patently corrupt gerrymandering that put me into the 6th District, I should look at the bright side; I now can vote AGAINST the troglodyte, Roscoe Bartlett. It's a sad state of affairs when I need to consider each race for office at the polls in terms of whom to vote against, instead of whom to vote for, but that's what it has become.   more ›

The Washington Post and The Gazette believe in change for Maryland's 6th Congressional District. The two regional publications endorsed political newcomer and Democratic challenger John Delaney over 86-year-old incumbant Republican Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, who is seeking re-election for an 11th term. According to The Washington Post: Mr. Delaney is an excellent candidate — shrewd, smart, hardworking and independent. He would be a standout representative for the 6th District and a marked improvement on Mr. Bartlett. We endorse Mr. Delaney... Mr. Delaney is a newcomer to politics, but he is exceptionally well-versed in domestic issues. Moreover, he has the problem-solving skills to be an unusually effective congressman. Mr. Bartlett, …
