With a No. 1 seed comes lofty expectations, and unfortunately for the Gaithersburg High School varsity baseball team they were unable to be met. After a first-round bye to the 4A West region quarterfinals, the top-seeded Trojans were eliminated by No. 9 Wootton, 7-3. Gaithersburg squandered a potentially easier opportunity to advance through the regional bracket. Wootton will host No. 12 Northwest in the 4A West semifinals opposite No. 2 Bethesda Chevy Chase and No. 11 Churchill. Boy's and girl's lacrosse and softball teams from Gaithersburg area schools struggled in the first round of the state tournament.
State title dreams ended for a number of Gaithersburg area teams in the first round of their respective state tournaments. The boy's lacrosse, girl's lacrosse and softball teams from Gaithersburg, Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill high schools posted a combined 2-3 record in round one. Boy's Lacrosse No. 6 Gaithersburg High School was upset by No. 11 Thomas Johnson, 13-4. Thomas Johnson travels to Gaithersburg Friday to challenge No. 3 Quince Orchard at 7 p.m. The Cougars advanced to the regional quarterfinal with a first-round bye. They say to be the best, you have to beat the best, and in the Maryland state baseball tournament, the 4A West region goes through Gaithersburg. The Trojans earned the No. 1 overall seed in the bracket—released Wednesday by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association—and nearby Quince Orchard High School is the No. 4 seed. Watkins Mill High School is the No. 11 seed in the 3A West division bracket. As Maryland state lacrosse tournament games get underway Wednesday, local varsity softball teams have to wait an extra day to kick off their 2013 run to the state championship. Six golfers from Gaithersburg-area high schools qualified for the 4A/3A MPSSAA golf semifinals, held Monday in College Park.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association is launching a new initiative to teach parents, coaches and students the ins and outs of college athletics.
The state's governing body of high school athletics is striving to make the transition to college easier on student-athletes. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association has put together a program to help families and schools better understand the process of college recruiting and eligibility. The service is provided through The Recruiting Education Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization. "We are happy to provide this informational program to our student-athletes and their families at no cost," MPSSAA Executive Director Ned Sparks said in a news release. Monday's steady rain has prevented some county sporting events from getting underway. Gaithersburg High School's varsity baseball and safeball games have been postponed, along with Quince Orchard's varsity baseball game. The Trojans' No. 9-ranked baseball team was set to face No. 1 Whitman at 6 p.m. in Bethesda.
