Quince Orchard boys have outscored Watkins Mill 33-3 over the past two seasons, but the Wolverines head into tonight's match-up with a better record.
Boys' lacrosse - Magruder @ Watkins Mill Friday, April 20, 2012 Watkins Mill now heads to Quince Orchard tonight at 7pm. QO comes into the game with a 4-3 record, while Watkins Mill sits at 5-2. While those records bely the 19-1 and 14-2 thrashings the Cougars laid on Watkins Mill the past two years, tonight promises to be a much closer contest. The teams have faced three common opponents so far this season. Clarksburg beat Watkins Mill 5-3 on April 17, then bested Quince Orchard 5-4 three days later. Both squads fell to Walter Johnson — the Wolverines 10-7 and the Cougars 7-4 — and both beat up on Magruder — 16-2 and 20-0, respectively.

Colonels' Garland Owens scores 24 points as Patriots season ends on a down note.
During the first half of Thursday's playoff game at Magruder, the Wootton Patriots were bending but refused to break. Down just 13 midway through the game, Wootton seemed determined to make the top-seeded Colonels earn their way to the regional finals. But an ‘alley-oop’ dunk from J.J. Epps to Garland Owens on the very first play of the second half set the tone for what would turn into the Patriots' most lopsided loss of the season. From that play forward, Magruder was in complete control. Backed by a 24-point performance from Owens, including two additional alley-oop dunks in the second half, the Magruder Colonels blasted the visiting Wootton Patriots, 82-40, to advance to the Maryland 4A West regional finals Saturday afternoon against …

Rockets advance to 4-4 on the season, while Magruder slips to 1-7.
The Richard Montgomery football team started off slowly Friday night, but had a strong second half to beat Magruder 14-3. Coming off of a rough loss to undefeated Quince Orchard, Richard Montgomery made a few mistakes early in the game. They were shut out in the first half, largely due to two fumbles that Magruder was able to recover. The Colonels scored late in the second quarter with a field goal to take the lead at halftime. “We didn't have much to say at halftime,” RM coach Neal Owens said. “We just wanted them to go out and play like we knew they could.” Offensively, quarterback Steven Burchett took control in the second half. The option started to help move the ball downfield, and on the first drive after halftime, Burchett faked a …

The first of three funerals will be held Wednesday at St. Francis of Assisi in Derwood.
Update, 8:45 p.m.: County police are advising drivers to avoid the area around St. Francis of Assisi, in Derwood during and around the hours of 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, when the church will host funeral services for Haeley McGuire. No road closures are planned at this time. County police will be present to assist with traffic flow. Original post, 6:40 p.m.: Magruder High School has posted funeral details for senior Haeley McGuire and Magruder alumni Spencer Datt and John Hoover on the school's Web site. Warriors pull off upset in rivalry game.
The boys basketball rivalry game between Magruder and Sherwood started the same way the first matchup did: A completely packed house and two student sections standing and cheering. The game Friday night ended in a very different way though. Sherwood avenged their loss from earlier in the season, pulling off a 57-53 upset, and getting their second upset in as many games after also beating Springbrook on Tuesday. Magruder picked up their second loss of the season despite getting a great game from sophomore guard Nick Griffin, who scored 23 points, 18 of them from behind the arc. “He was the only guy carrying us on offense,” coach Dan Harwood said after the game. “It's hard to win with just one guy. We've been doing well when we have three or…

Woodhouse free throws in final seconds of OT help hand Springbrook its first in-county loss in nearly three years
Over the course of the past decade Springbrook and Magruder have been among Montgomery County's top boys basketball programs. Since 2000, the teams have combined for four state championships and countless regional titles. The Colonels won a state title in 2001 while the Blue Devils are the three-time defending Maryland 4A state champions. Wednesday night in Silver Spring, the teams met on the hardwood for the first time this season and Magruder became the first Montgomery County team in nearly three years to beat Springbrook. Magruder sophomore Nick Griffin led three Colonels in double figures with 18 points as the Rockville school snapped Springbrook's consecutive game winning streak against county opponents at 61 games in a 68-67 …

Magruder boys soccer faces Urbana in the state final on Thursday at UMBC
After each playoff game, the Magruder High School boys soccer team held up fingers representing how many more games they needed to win to capture a state championship. After Saturday's win over Severna Park, players held up just one finger. The Colonels (15-1-2) will play Urbana High for the Maryland 4A state championship at 5 p.m. on Thursday at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Magruder last won the title in 2007, with a 5-1 victory over Perry Hall. The seniors on this year's team remember that game. Senior goalkeeper Torsten Meuschke drew comparisons between the leadership on this year's team and that of the '07 Colonels. "This year we have a lot of senior leadership," Meuschke said. "Everything has been clicking now. We …

Dulaney downs Colonels on strength of five goals from George
Dulaney High School seniors Sarah George and Abby Sprinkel stepped up big in the Class 4A state field hockey semifinal against Magruder High School. "We came out faster and stronger and were prepared before the game. We just took them with positioning and being quick," said George, whose five goals led the Lions to a 7-0 victory on a chilly Wednesday night at Franklin High School in Reisterstown. Dulaney, of Timonium, will face powerhouse Westminster High School (18-0) for the 4A state championship at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Washington College in Chestertown. Westminster defeated Severna Park, 4-1, in Wednesday's first semifinal game. Dulaney lost in the state semifinals last year. The championship game is going to be the first for the …
