Facebook and Twitter offer details of lives cut short and provide a place for friends to mourn.
On Friday, students from Col. Zadok Magruder High School in Rockville signed on to Twitter to make plans for the weekend. It was one of the last weekends of high school for the Class of 2011. Students tweeted with friends about graduation, about television shows, movies and music and about parties. They traded one-liners and gossiped about classmates. Haeley McGuire, an 18-year-old Magruder senior, signed on and retweeted a message from a friend: @gnourtina by HaeleyMcG Count your blessings, not your problems. It was her final digital fingerprint on the online social network. On Sunday, McGuire was one of three young adults killed in an early morning car crash in Olney. The trio left a digital trail of their lives on social networks that …

MCPS students might be involved, fire and rescue and school officials say; injuries not life-threatening
Update, 4:17 p.m., Monday, Jan. 3: The four occupants of a car that hit a tree along Muncaster Mill Road on Monday afternoon were Col. Zadok Magruder High School students who were returning from classes at the Thomas Edison High School of Technology, said Cpl. Dan Friz, a county police spokesman. Edison is co-located on the Wheaton High School campus in Silver Spring. The injuries were "pretty minor" and the students were alert and conscious when help arrived, Friz said. They were taken to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda for precaution, he said. Police informed Magruder High officials of the incident. The school was expected to send an alert about the incident to parents and students via the school's internal email list serve, Friz said. A …

Magruder wrestling can't overcome injuries, loses 43-32
The season started off promising for the Magruder High wrestling team. They had several returning wrestlers who would compete for tops in the county and a strong upcoming core. However, injuries have ravaged the team early on, taking out several key veterans and leaving Magruder on the losing end of four of their first five dual meets, including a 43-32 loss to Churchill High on Wednesday night in Rockville. Tony Maroulis was the latest casualty for Magruder, as he separated his shoulder in a weekend match against Wootton and did not wrestle Wednesday. He is expected to miss at least a month. Magruder suffered with that loss, as a normally strong heavyweight slot instead turned into a pin for Churchill. "The injuries are killing us," …

Magruder's boys varsity basketball aims to challenge for the playoffs
When most basketball teams lose their leading scorer, coaches and owners start to unravel. Ask Cleveland Cavaliers fans. But longtime Magruder High boys basketball Coach Dan Harwood is not most coaches. Harwood, who has coached the Colonels to a state championship and two regional titles since 2001, couldn't be more excited about the 2010-11 season. "We have high expectations," Harwood said last week. "We lost one starting senior and a few role players. We have four returning starters this year who are ready to play." The starter who graduated is Harwood's son and last year's leading scorer Tim, who is now playing at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. Tim averaged 18 points per game, as the team finished 12-11 last season. Harwood's team…
