Trojans Secure No. 1 Seed In State Baseball Tournament

Gaithersburg High School is the No. 1 seed in the 4A West region. Quince Orchard, and Watkins Mill (3A) also qualified.

They say to be the best, you have to beat the best, and in the Maryland state baseball tournament, the 4A West region goes through Gaithersburg. The Trojans earned the No. 1 overall seed in the bracket—released Wednesday by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association—and nearby Quince Orchard High School is the No. 4 seed. Watkins Mill High School is the No. 11 seed in the 3A West division bracket. Gaithersburg secured a first-round bye and will face the winner of No. 8 Walter Johnson and No. 9 Wootton in the regional quarterfinals. Quince Orchard will face No. 13 Northwest in the 4A West region's first round, with the winner slated to challenge the winner of No. 5 Montgomery Blair and No. 12 Clarksburg. The full 4A Division…

State Task Force to Hold Hearing on Sports-Related Concussions

Testimony will be considered as part of a report to Maryland's State Board of Education.

Update, Nov. 1, 2012: The Maryland State Department of Education’s Traumatic Brain Injury/Sports Related Concussion Task Force's public hearing on traumatic brain injuries and concussions among interscholastic athletes in Maryland public schools has been rescheduled, the State Department of Education announced Wednesday. The hearing will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Nov. 5 in the state school board meeting room at 200 W. Baltimore St., in Baltimore. The rescheduling of the hearing, which was originally set for Monday, Oct. 29, is due to Hurricane Sandy. MPSSAA Hosts Eligibility, Recruiting Webinar

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association is launching a new initiative to teach parents, coaches and students the ins and outs of college athletics.

The state's governing body of high school athletics is striving to make the transition to college easier on student-athletes. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association has put together a program to help families and schools better understand the process of college recruiting and eligibility. The service is provided through The Recruiting Education Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization. "We are happy to provide this informational program to our student-athletes and their families at no cost," MPSSAA Executive Director Ned Sparks said in a news release.
