Moms Talk Q&A: Summer Camp

Your place to weigh in.

Hello again for this week's Moms Talk. As always, our Moms Council will get the discussion started, but you take it from there with ideas, thoughts, and comments of your own! This week's topic: Summer camp: Is it worth the expense, what to look for in a camp, and any experiences you may have had.

I never did camp as a kid. Wait, that's not true. One summer I did a one-week summer camp. I look at what's out there today and it's amazing. There's something for everyone. I don't think this many options existed when I was young. Is it better or worse? I'm not sure. But I think -- and this is just a hunch -- it would be good to put your kid in a summer camp for part of the summer and then let …   more ›

Moms Talk Q&A: Television

Your chance to weigh in.

Hello Moms! This is your chance to weigh in on issues that impact your family. As always, our discussion will be kicked off by our esteemed Moms Council, but keep it going by adding your thoughts in the comments section. This week's topic: Television: How much is enough, too much, and what, if any, parameters should be set?

Gail Norris

The amount of TV watching is the one issue on which my husband and I do not see eye to eye. He’s in the TV business professionally, so it’s an integral part of his life and he’d keep it on all day. Me, not so much. I enjoy watching my favorite shows, but I’d be happy if the TV were off too. When our twins arrived, we had to compromise on how much the TV is on and when the kids allowed to watch. …   more ›

Moms Talk Q&A: After School Activities

Your place to weigh in.

Hello again to Moms Talk, where mothers can come together and talk about the issues that matter to them. To get the discussion going, we'll hear from our panel of Gaithersburg mothers, the Moms Council. This week's topic: After School Activities: Should they be required, optional, guided choices, left up to the kids, etc. Feel free (encouraged, in fact) to add your two, four or six cents to the discussion. Also, if you have something you want to talk about in a future edition of Moms Talk, let us know in the comments!

My daughter isn't yet at the afterschool activities age, but I know what my current opinion is on this: like everything in life, it's all about balance. I think it's important that kids have activities and are encouraged to channel their energies and talents into a hobby -- be it sports, music, art, etc. I know for me, once I hit middle and high school -- and in college -- it was my …   more ›

Moms Talk Q&A: Tiger Moms

Weigh in.

This week's topic, which as always will be started by our Moms Council, will deal with a topic that has been swirling around in the media lately. Shihoko -- I agree that there is just WAY too much TV watching going on these days. I wonder how much of it is due to having two working parents who are both exhausted after full work days and who then take the easy way out. Not an excuse by any means, and we need to fight the urge to take that easy way out when it comes to raising kids. But it may be one explanation...   more ›

Moms Talk Q&A: Vaccines

What's your take?

This week's edition of Moms Talk is, like every other week, a place for moms like you to weigh in on the issues facing parents today. To get the discussion started we have our distinguished Moms Panel. But we want to hear from you too! This weeks's topic: Vaccinations: Did you or didn't you, and what, if any, were the moral dilemmas you faced in your decision?

Gaurov Dayal

As a pediatrician and a parent, I believe that vaccinations are vitally important to the health of all children. The vaccinations given to children today, which are scientifically tested and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, prevent some very serious and life-threatening diseases such as polio, mumps, rubella and influenza. While most vaccines may not be 100% effective (many are …   more ›

"Taylor cited references to the insensitivity of the glans." -- not exactly, no, and in any case he explicitly avoided any kind of quantitative comparison ("...no attempt was made to quantify the specialized nerve endings of the `ridged band'..."). "Waskett and Morris's disputation of Sorrells' data has been rebutted." -- A letter in response has been published, but it doesn't really qualify as a…   more ›

Moms Talk Q&A

Going back to work.

OK moms, this weekly column is your place to speak out about issues that mater to you. Patch has assembled a Moms Council comprised of local mothers who will suggest topics and get the discussion started. Shihoko Goto is a mother of a seven- and four-year-old. Robin Ferrier is the mother of a seven-month-old. Gail Norris is the mother of 4-year-old twins. So to get things started off, here is this week's topic: The first week back at work: After being out for a few months on maternity leave, what tricks or techniques did you use to get yourself ready to face the office? What was it like during your first week back? What lessons did you learn or what would you do differently?

When I do have conference calls on my work from home days, I put it out there upfront and make it clear that it's a work from home day so they may hear my daughter in the background. People seem to be very accepting of it.   more ›
