Maryland delegation was set to leave next week on eight-day trip to Israel, Jordan and the West Bank.
The escalating conflict in the Gaza Strip has forced Gov. Martin O’Malley to postpone his eight-day trade mission to the Middle East. O’Malley (D) and a delegation of elected officials and business leaders were set to leave next week for Israel, Jordan and the West Bank city of Ramallah, The Washington Post reported. He announced his decision today after mounting Hamas rocket strikes and Israeli counter-strikes that have left more than 100 dead in the past week. “Not wanting to be a distraction from the urgent cause of peace, I look forward to visiting Israel in the months ahead with Maryland business, research and academic leaders,” O’Malley said in a statement. “For now, we join with our Israeli and Palestinian neighbors in praying for a…

The minimum of 71 delegates needed to pass the legislation voted to approve the bill.
It was close, but the Maryland House of Delegates voted to approve a same-sex marriage bill Friday night that was a priority for Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley. Legislators passed the Civil Marriage Protection Act with 72 votes in favor and 67 delegates voting against the legislation. The bill needed a minimum of 71 votes to pass. The total was originally reported as 71 votes in favor because a technical glitch locked out Del. John Bohanon’s vote in favor of the bill. Just two Republicans—Dels. Wade Kach and Robert Costa of Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties, respectively—voted in favor of the bill. A similar bill died last year in the House when proponents failed to secure the needed votes and were forced to return the bill to committee…

Republicans say governor's tax proposals will hurt the working families he wants to help.
Gov. Martin O'Malley called for legislators to pass a sales tax on gasoline, saying on Wednesday that the decision would be unpopular but much needed. The governor made his comments in Annapolis during his sixth State of the State speech in which he focused on jobs, taxes and what he called tough choices. "Asking our fellow citizens to do more will not be popular," O'Malley said. "But without anger, fear or meanness, let’s ask one another: how much less education do we think would be good for our children’s future? How much less education do we want? How much less public safety? How many fewer jobs? There are costs, and there are values." Republicans in the General Assembly criticized O'Malley for policies they said will hurt the same …

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said dialysis centers were a priority for power companies.
About 378,000 people were still without power in Maryland as of 9 p.m., Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said in a conference call with the media. Crews were expected to work through the night. “A lot of progress was made over the last few hours in Anne Arundel County and Harford County,” O’Malley said, “a little bit in Baltimore County, and also St. Mary’s." More than 296,000 BGE customers and 28,000 PEPCO customers were still without power, O’Malley said, with the remainder of the outages being handled by Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative. Richard Muth, director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, said there were still 28 state roads closed due to standing water, debris or downed power lines. Only one shelter remained open in…

Gov. Martin O'Malley helped cut the ribbon on the new station Monday.
Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) was among the state, local and federal officials that gathered in Bethesda Monday to mark the installation of a new, solar-powered electric vehicle charging station. The station is located outside the SunTrust bank at 10401 Old Georgetown Road. The 18-foot, 1,410-watt “solar power pole” – which charges two electric vehicles – is the first electric vehicle charging station in the state to feature sun-tracking technology, using a GPS system to move solar panels mounted on a pole with the position of the sun. Designed to have a small footprint to fit in urban environments, the pole was developed by Columbia-based engineering and manufacturing firm Advanced Technology and Research Corp. The pole was …
