Guide: Hometown Holidays

Everything you need to know about this year’s Hometown Holidays and Memorial Day Parade in Rockville.

  Rockville marks the unofficial start of summer this weekend with Hometown Holidays and 69th Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade. Hometown Holidays is in Rockville Town Center from Saturday, May 25 ending with the parade on Monday, May 27. Music is the main focal point on Saturday and Sunday. And this year’s lineup showcases a couple of local artists who made it big. Performers include rising country music star and Maryland native Shane Gamble—who was just added to the CMA Fest lineup in Nashville—performs Saturday night and Grammy nominated hip-hop artist Christylez Bacon, who represents Southeast. Jogger Struck By School Bus Tuesday

Police: Runner's injuries may be life threatening

A jogger was seriously injured after being hit by an unoccupied school bus in Rockville on Tuesday, Montgomery County police said. Police said Jason Alexander Estabrook, 42, of Point of Rocks, was running along Shady Grove Road at around 2:30 p.m. when he was hit by a bus at the intersection of Darnestown Road. Police said Estabrook's inuries were "possibly life-threatening." The driver, Tugjnyam Bavaa, 58, of Rockville, was not injured. Montgomery County Public Schools spokesman Dana Tofig said the driver had just finished his route from Wootton High School and was heading to pick up students at Frost Middle School.

Is Irony Out of Style? Americans Down on Hipsters

Forty-two percent of people asked have an unfavorable view of the very hip, says a new poll.

  A poll released by Public Policy Polling shows that a large percentage of Americans (42 percent) have an unfavorable opinion of “hipsters,”  a group of men and women “unusually aware of and interested in new and unconventional patterns,” according to Merriam Webster. The Urban Dictionary says members of this subculture are “typically in their 20s and 30s” and “value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, indie-rock” and “witty banter.” Locally, data from the 2010 Census shows that only 19 percent of Montgomery County’s population is between the ages of 20 and 34. Celebrate the summer movie release with some of these local tie-ins.

  The Great Gatsby is slated to premier on the big screen and it's inspiring people to delve deeper into the story’s history, culture, music, food and drink. Starting with F. Scott Fitzgerald’s grave at St. Mary’s Church in Rockville, there are a number of local places to help you get your Gatsby on, according to The Washington Post. If you venture to Fitzgerald’s gravesite, take note of the epitaph, which reads, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” This quote is the final line in The Great Gatsby. Gaithersburg Student Claims $10,000 Prize In National Poetry Contest

Maryland State Poetry Out Loud Champion Blessed Sheriff, a sophomore at Richard Montgomery High School and resident of Gaithersburg, finished second.

A Gaithersburg student claimed a $10,000 prize for being runner-up in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals. Blessed Sheriff, a sophomore at Richard Montgomery High School and a resident of Gaithersburg, was the Maryland State Poetry Out Loud Champion, according to an announcement. Sheriff was one of nine finalists, selected from a pool of 53 students representing every state, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands at the national finals. Hosted at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium Tuesday night, Sherriff fell just short of the $20,000 grand prize for the poetry recitation contest. Phone Scammer Tells Montgomery Village Man His Son, Brother Would Be Held Hostage If He Didn’t Send Money

Montgomery County police say phone scammer has phoned residents in Rockville, Aspen HIll and Montgomery Village.

A Montgomery Village man was the victim of a phone scam in which a caller told him that his son and brother were being held hostage after an accident and would not be released unless he sent money to pay for the other person's vehicle, according to Montgomery County police. The resident told the suspect he was calling police and ended the call, police said, and resident was able to verify that his brother was safe. Montgomery County police have linked the incident to at least two others: On Feb. 20, a Rockville resident received a call asking if she had a son. When she replied, “Yes”, the caller stated that her son was in a car accident and had been kidnapped. The suspect told the victim that her son would be killed unless the victim wired…

A 51-year-old Anne Arundel County man was charged with murder Tuesday in the death of John P. Ryan, whose body was found in the trunk of his car near Shady Grove Metro in December.

A 51-year-old Anne Arundel County man was arrested Tuesday at a New York airport in connection with the killing of a Frederick County man who was found dead in the trunk of his car near the Shady Grove Metro station in December, Maryland State Police announced in a press release. Michael A. Stahlnecker, of the 1700 block of Fallsway Drive in Crofton, is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony/violent crime, police said. Update: Frederick Woman Killed In Fatal Crash Near I-270S Shady Grove Exit

A fatal accident on Interstate 270 southbound caused major delays Monday morning for commuters in the Gaithersburg-Rockville area.

(Update, 8:20 p.m.) Maryland State Police have identified Maria Durdandal, 50, of Frederick, as the driver who was killed in an early-morning, single-car crash on Interstate 270 southbound near the Shady Grove Road exit, according to an NBC Washington report. Police said the impact of the collision was so severe that portions of the concrete barrier struck by Durdandal's car broke off and landed on northbound I-270, and Durdandal was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.
