Two UMD Students Dead, One Injured in College Park Shooting

Graduate student Dayvon Maurice Green took his life after firing on his roommates, killing one.

Editor's note: Early Tuesday morning, two University of Maryland students were left dead and another injured in a shooting on 36th Ave. in College Park. Police say that the gunman, identified as 23-year-old graduate student Dayvon Maurice Green, set several fires around his house before shooting two of his roommates when they came outside. One—Stephen Alex Rane, 22, of Silver Spring—was later pronounced dead, while another suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Green then turned the gun on himself, according to police. City Council: 'Our Hearts Are Broken' for Newtown, CT

The mayor and City Council reflected on the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, CT, a community they said was quiet and safe, like Gaithersburg .

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz and members of the City Council say they were stunned by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings and want to minimize risk of such violence locally. Officials used part of Monday night's meeting to reflect on the tragedy in what they said was a small, quiet town, much like Gaithersburg. UPDATE: Man Shot In Gaithersburg, Suspect In Custody

An adult male was shot in the 1000 block of West Side Drive in Gaithersburg Tuesday evening.

(Updated 11:05 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31) The victim in Tuesday evening's shooting in Gaithersburg is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital, Gaithersburg police officer Dan Lane said. Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Justin Tirell Anderson, of Ashburn, VA. Anderson is charged with attempted second degree murder and use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, Lane said. Anderson is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center. Report: Former Army Ranger Gets 28 Years In Gaithersburg Shooting

Gary Smith was convicted last month of involuntary manslaughter in the 2006 shooting death of his Gaithersburg roommate, a fellow Army Ranger.

A former Army Ranger was sentenced Monday to 28 years in prison for killing his Gaithersburg roommate and fellow Ranger, The Washington Examiner reported. Gary Smith, 29, was convicted last month of involuntary manslaughter in the 2006 shooting of 22-year-old Michael McQueen. UPDATE: 5 p.m., Sept. 27 - The victim in Wednesday night's shooting in Montgomery Village remains in critical condition, leaving investigators unclear about the circumstances surrounding the incident. Montgomery County police have tapped into their cash reward program in the hopes of spurring information about the shooting, which investigators believe took place at 10 p.m. around Clubhouse Road and Montgomery Village Avenue, near the McDonald's in the Montgomery Village Center. Police have only identified the victim as a 25-year-old male. He called a family member after he was shot multiple times, who then called 9-1-1, police said. Report: Army Ranger Guilty In 2006 Shooting Death of Fellow Ranger

Former Army Ranger Gary Smith was found guilty Wednesday of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting of his roommate and fellow Army Ranger Michael McQueen in their Gaithersburg apartment, The Washington Post reported.

Former Army Ranger Gary Smith was found guilty Wednesday of involuntary manslaughter for the 2006 shooting death of his roommate and fellow Army Ranger, Michael McQueen, in their Gaithersburg apartment, The Washington Post reported. A Montgomery County Circuit Court jury deliberated for nearly 12 hours over two days before reaching a verdict, The Post said, but the jury rejected the most serious count of second degree murder. "McQueen was found dead early in the morning of Sept. 26, 2006, after he and Smith spent a night smoking marijuana, drinking and playing pool," according to the report. UPDATE: Montgomery County Police are searching for the person who shot and gravely wounded a 20-year-old Gaithersburg man in Montgomery Village last night. At 10:04pm, police were called to the 19100 block of Montgomery Village Avenue—near the Center Stage and Center Court condominium communities—after neighbors heard gunshots and saw an injured man.
