Thanksgiving is a favorite foodie holiday for many reasons, one of which is that big turkey. The bird not only feeds a table-full on the actual day, but it keeps on giving in the form of leftovers. What once seemed an afterthought, the leftover menu now is loaded with possibilities. After carving every possible shred of meat of our bird, I always like to make turkey soup. But those chunks of succulent light and dark meat also have the potential for some more creative comfort food, such as pot pies. Washington, DC, will have the fifth worst traffic congestion on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, according to a Huffington Post report. In the DC region, rush hour will peak Wednesday between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., according to the report. Travel will take 30 percent longer than usual on average. Black Friday shoppers will be clogging the roads as well. On Friday, traffic across the country is expected to peak between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., according to the report. Acceptance of the holiday dinner underdog has grown steadily since the product's introduction in 1995.
It's not exactly a vegetarian takeover, but still something for Tofurky lovers to celebrate: The three-millionth Tofurky roast was sold last week, according to a Turtle Island Foods statement. Tofurky—invented by Chevy Chase native Seth Tibbott, The Washington Post reported—was first introduced in 1995 by the small Oregon-based food processor. That year, 500 Tofurky Roasts were sold from about 20 natural foods stores in the Pacific Northwest, according to the statement. Since then, Tofurky acceptance has improved every year. The Tofurky Roast is "a savory combination of organic tofu, wheat protein, plant extracts and spices that give it a taste and texture similar to a boneless breast of turkey stuffed with a wild rice, celery and whole …

The Gaithersburg Police Department has a simple message for travelers during the Thanksgiving holiday: Drive safe. “Officers will be out in force over the holiday weekend focusing on speed enforcement, seatbelt compliance, aggressive and impaired drivers," Gaithersburg Chief of Police Mark P. Sroka said. "Your safety is our number one priority." Gaithersburg police are encouraging drivers to plan ahead and be patient while traveling, not to text or make any hand held phone calls, and use a designated driver or public transportation if you find youself to be impaired. Manna Food Center — Montgomery County's largest food distribution center — is lending a helping hand to more than 300 families in need during Thanksgiving week. The Gaithersburg-based food center will provide 70 pounds of emergency food assistance and donated turkeys to the community, Manna announced Wednesday. Community members can drop off turkey donations to Manna — located at 9311 Gaither Road in Gaithersburg — before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and they will be passed out to families in need. “The community is instrumental in serving our clients throughout the holiday season and during the rest of the year," Manna Executive Director Minerva Delgado said in a statement.
