Tonight's breast cancer fundraiser has become a Lady 'Rines tradition.
One special night every year, Watkins Mill High School's gynasium fills with a sea of pink as the girls' volleyball team takes up a cause that hits especially close to home: the DiG PiNK fundraiser for breast cancer research and awareness. This year's match pits the Lady 'Rines against the Clarksburg Coyotes tonight at Watkins Mill. JV starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by varsity at 6:30 p.m. Watkins Mill is one of thousands of teams from around the country taking part in the DiG PiNK National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally, in which players and coaches raise funds and promote breast health education. At Watkins Mill, the DiG PiNK game honors the memory of Jane Hydorn, a volleyball parent who lost her battle with cancer four years ago. Jane …

Watkins Mill student accused of striking a classmate in the back of the head during the Sept. 21 altercation.

A 17-year-old Watkins Mill student has been charged as a juvenile with second-degree assault in the Sept. 21 altercation just off the Gaithersburg school’s campus. Montgomery County police had received a complaint of a Watkins Mill student being struck in the back of the head as spectators left last Friday’s game between Watkins Mill and Clarksburg High School, which the Wolverines won 10-8 on a field goal with 10 seconds left on the clock. Wolverines held the Hornets in check in the first half, but Zach Bradshaw's big plays and the Hornets' running game powered Damascus to a 35-0 Week 2 win.
Watkins Mill had a season-defining upset in mind when Damascus headed into Wolverine Stadium on Friday for a battle between 3A West division foes that had rolled to big wins in Week 1. And for the better part of three quarters, a win didn't seem beyond the Wolverines' reach. But behind Damascus's bruising run game—and a pair of Zach Bradshaw highlights—the Swarmin’ Hornets' turned the hard-fought first half into a fourth-quarter blowout, handing the Wolverines a 35-0 defeat in their 2012 home opener. Watkins Mill (1-1) had its chances early on, as Damascus was slow get in gear. Four times in the first half, the Swarmin’ Hornets crossed into Watkins Mill territory. Two of those drives faltered on 4th down, and one turned Watkins Mill’s way …

Friday night showdown with powerhouse Damascus would be a watershed win for Wolverines football.
Watkins Mill head football coach Kevin Watson gathered his players around him next to the team’s idling bus after pounding Poolesville 42-14 last week. Never mind that the program hasn’t had a winning record in a decade. Never mind that the 2011 Wolverines sputtered short of lofty expectations, finishing with a 4-6 record. Never mind that since moving to the 3A West division, Watkins Mill football has seemed stuck behind powerhouses Seneca Valley and Damascus. The Wolverines's focus, Watson said, need be set solely on their Sept. 7 home opener against Damascus, when Wolverines Stadium will be a-rocking and its fans rabid for a tide-turning upset over the vaunted Swarmin’ Hornets. "In order to make that playoff run that we talked about, …

Other Week 1 results: Quince Orchard, Gaithersburg, Damascus and Seneca Valley start their seasons with impressive wins.
Coming off a 2011 season plagued by close loses that left Watkins Mill wondering what could have been, the Wolverines wasted no time at Poolesville Friday night, taking their first three drives of the 2012 season in for touchdowns as they rolled to a 42-14 win. The first scoring strike came on the game's second play from scrimmage. Senior QB Patrick Schlosser threw a short screen pass out wide to WR Dontay Hears, who followed a block and exploded downfield for a 50-yard score. The Wolverines struck again with 4:38 left in the first quarter, this time when senior RB Prodige Kikwata—a Good Counsel transfer—rumbled over the goal line from 18 yards out. After a Poolesville punt, senior RB Quinton Littlejohn put Watkins Mill up 21-0 on a 40-…
