Traveling on Metro this weekend? Stay informed about delays. Metro will perform system rebuilding work on all but one line in the system for the weekend of May 17-19. Tuesday's Metrorail fire caused commuters to sound off on Twitter.
Metro troubles reared their ugly head again on Tuesday as a track fire on the Red Line in Silver Spring caused significant delays during evening rush hour. Commuters took to Twitter to share their woes. @MROBart of Washington, DC was happy to have Twitter as a communication channel: "thank u #twitterverse for keeping us folks on the redline informed about the #silver spring FIRE when @wmata has failed to do so!" @wisemetis of Silver Spring had her evening plans impacted: "Red line train on fire at Silver Spring. Metro will perform system rebuilding work on all but one line in the system for the weekend of May 10-12. This weekend's rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines. Green Line trains will operate normally between Greenbelt and Branch Avenue. Additionally, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. Sunday, two hours early, to accommodate the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. These five Red Line stations will be closed for the weekend of May 3-5 as Metro does track work: Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring and Takoma. The County Council president tweeted a letter from the council to County Executive Leggett.
The Silver Spring Transit Center has become a $120 million headache for Montgomery County taxpayers. When the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority told the county it would not operate the transit center as planned, the pain got worse. County Council President Nancy Navarro (D-Dist. 4) of Silver Spring tweeted on Friday, referencing WMATA's decision and including a link to a letter the council sent to County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) on the topic. The letter requested that Leggett appear before the council Wednesday to discuss the ramifications of WMATA's decision.
Metro will open at 5 a.m. on Sunday for the Nike Women Half Marathon.
Free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains this weekend between the NoMa-Gallaudet and Takoma stations, according to a Metro news statement. The service changes will allow for bridge work at New York Avenue Station, and for tie replacement, insulator renewal and communication system upgrades. Starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, April 26, and continuing through closing on Sunday, two stations will be closed: Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland. After explosions at Boston Marathon, WMATA takes extra security measures.
Metro Transit Police day shift officers are being held on duty until further notice, running extra security patrols of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus and rail systems through rush hour, according to WMATA's official Twitter account. The news comes in the wake of two explosions which occurred as runners were crossing the finish line at the Boston Marathon. Boston Police have told the Associated Press that there were three people killed and at least 22 injuries as a result of the explosion. Agency decides against overhaul of old cars for purchase of new.
The Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently announced that it will spend $215 million over the next five years to replace some 4000-series rail cars made by Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie with brand-new 7000-series cars from Kawasaki, according to The Washington Post. The new rail cars will not have the ubiquitous orange and brown color scheme, and will add additional signs, brighter lights and more handholds. WMATA ordered a total of 428 of the new cars, at a total cost of $886 million, according to the report. The 4000-series cars have caused WMATA problems since they were first brought into the system in the early 1990s, but have not been the only cars with issues. Metro takes a break from its rigorous weekend track work schedule during the cherry blossom season, according to a Metro news statement. This year, the break has occurred on four consecutive weekends. This weekend—April 13 and 14—is the last weekend for the "spring break." "The only planned weekend work during that time will take place late Sunday evenings, when ridership is light," Metro reported.
