Shuttle Buses Replace Trains on Red Line Segment

Red Line customers traveling by shuttle bus through the work zone are advised to add 40 minutes to their trip times.

  Red Line trains will single track in two zones this weekend, from 10 p.m. on Friday, March 15, through closing on Sunday, Metro's website reported.  Three stations will be closed during this time: Rhode Island Avenue, Brookland and Fort Totten. Trains will run between Glenmont and Takoma, and between NoMa-Gallaudet and Shady Grove. They will operate every 10 minutes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and every 15 minutes at other times. Free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains between the NoMa-Gallaudet and Takoma stations so that work crews can perform ongoing platform reconstruction, track upgrades and bridge work, Metro reported. Sequestration Cuts Could Delay Improvements At Metro Stations

Metro will likely see $8 million less in federal funding for capital projects, The Washington Post reports.

Improvements at Metro stations could be delayed because of a cut in federal funding for the transit system, The Washington Post reports. The $8 million cut in federal dollars for capital projects is a result of sequestration, according to the report. The cuts could also mean plans to upgrade Metro’s fare card system – which would allow Metro riders to pay for rides directly with a credit card – could be delayed or reduced in scope, The Post reports. It wasn't clear which station improvement plans could be delayed, or whether escalator improvement projects were among them. Police: Suspect was 'yelling and acting erratically' before stabbing.

Update: 1:10 p.m., March 14: A 24-year-old male was charged with second-degree assault with a weapon after police said he stabbed a man while boarding a Ride On bus Wednesday evening at the Shady Grove Metro station, a county police spokesperson said. Mustapha Bamba, of an unconfirmed address, used a pocket knife to stab a 21-year-old man in the leg following an argument, Officer Rebecca Innocenti said. Police were called to the Metro station at 5:41 p.m. and the victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries, she said. Witnesses told police Bamba and victim, among others, were gathered at a bus stop when Bamba started yelling and acting erratically, Innocenti said. Bamba approached the victim and accused him of …

Report: $50M Shady Grove Arena Sketched By Developers

Plans are in the works for a new $50 million, 6,500 seat arena near Shady Grove Metro, The Gazette reports.

Plans for a $50 million, multi-purpose arena slated to be built on an 8-acre property adjacent to Shady Grove Metro Station are being sketched by a local developer, The Gazette reports. Potomac native William Askinazi, principal for the development company D&A Sports and Entertainment, said he envisions a space "where indoor lacrosse championships could take place simultaneously with antique roadshows," according to the report. "A Taylor Swift concert could dominate the space one night, he said, and a Disney show could take center stage the next night." Red Line passengers should allow for about 10 minutes of additional travel time this weekend, Metro advised.

The single tracking will occur to allow for track renewal and communication system upgrades, Metro reported. Metro Chief Planner To Discuss Growth Plan With Transit Riders

On Tuesday, Metro’s head of planning Shyam Kannan will answer questions about the transit system's 30-year growth plan.

  Transit riders will get a chance to review Metro’s 30-year growth plan with Metro’s chief planner next Tuesday at a meeting of advocacy group Action Committee for Transit, the group said in a press release. The recently-released, $26 billion plan calls for running eight-car trains across the Metrorail system, upgrading bus service, adding new rail tunnels and pedestrian tunnels in downtown Washington, DC, and other changes. Metro general manager Richard Sarles told The Washington Post that the infrastructure upgrades are necessary to keep up with the region's growth. “Now is the time for the region — with Metro in the lead — to begin talking about projects that make the most sense for making long-term investments," Sarles told The Post. …
