No pedestrian accidents have been reported in past month due in part to increased safety measures
In response to five fatal accidents in Montgomery County over the first 10 weeks of 2013, Gaithersburg Police has stepped up efforts to promote pedestrian safety. Just one week after a 55-year-old man was struck and killed by a school bus on Clopper Road, police took to the streets to help prevent another fatal incident. Officers were stationed at three high-risk intersections — Clopper Road and Firstfield Road, Route 355 and Odend Hal Avenue and Great Seneca Highway and Orchard Ridge Drive — as part of a pedestrian safety initiative. Gaithersburg police partnered with officers from Montgomery County and the city of Rockville to issue 139 traffic citations in a Friday night sting to aggressively enforce the nighttime use of seatbelts, county police announced. From approximately 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., officers were stationed at entrance and exit ramps of I-270 and I-495 and observed vehicles for seatbelt non-compliance and other safety violations, according to county police. A 26-year-old man was was charged with two counts of second degree burglary and theft less than $1,000 in connection to two burglaries of a Gaithersburg veterinary hospital, police say. Joshua Richards, of no fixed address, twice broke into Negola's Ark Veterinary Hospital, located at 9401 Fields Road, according to Gaithersburg police. After the second incident, which occurred on April 30 at 2:17 a.m., Richards was observed fleeing on foot to the rear of the building, police said. He was later located within the wooded area behind Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse and placed under arrest. Gaithersburg police officers stopped about 100 vehicles in one hour for violations during an educational pedestrian sting in Kentlands last week, The Gazette reported. Conducted at the intersection of Market Street and Center Point Way, officers used a handful of volunteers in bright yellow T-shirts to act as pedestrian decoys, according to the report. Drivers were warned after officers saw them driving without wearing seat belts, not yielding to pedestrians and not stopping at the marked line at a stop sign, Gaithersburg police officer Dan Lane told The Gazette. Last week police NINJAs were on the prowl, ready to ticket motorists who weren’t wearing their seatbelts. NINJA—which stands for Nighttime Injury Avoidance—is a campaign to enforce seatbelt use at night. It’s a collaborative effort among several police agencies: Montgomery County Police, Gaithersburg Police, Rockville City Police, Montgomery County Sherriff’s Office and Maryland State Police. Officers were located on exit ramps on Interstate 270 and Interstate 495 to catch seatbelt offenders between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Friday, April 5. April 1 marks the 50th anniversary of the Gaithersburg Police Department.
April 1 marks a day for jokes, but the Gaithersburg Police Department has been all business for 50 years. On April 1, 1963, a resolution was signed by then Mayor Merton F. Duvall establishing the Gaithersburg Police Department. In hope of preventing another fatal incident involving a pedestrian, Gaithersburg police took to three high-risk intersections to promote pedestrian safety to walkers and drivers alike. On March 26, from 4-9 p.m., Gaithersburg officers were stationed at Clopper Road at Firstfield Road, Route 355 at Odend Hal Avenue and Great Seneca Highway at Orchard Ridge Drive, according to a news release. The focus was on pedestrians not properly using crosswalks, drivers failing to stop at clearly marked stop lines and drivers failing to yield to pedestrians. A 27-year-old Silver Spring man was arrested for burglaries at a Gaithersburg restaurant and office building, police said. Larry Harris Jr., of Banquo Terrace, was charged with second and fourth degree burglary and theft less than $1,000 in two burglaries on South Frederick Avenue. On Jan. 9, police from both Gaithersburg and Montgomery County responded to Burma Road Restaurant, located at 617 South Fredrick Avenue, at 10:42 p.m. for the report of a commercial burglar alarm, police said. An unknown suspect had entered the business through a window and an undisclosed amount of money was taken. Suspect at large in armed robbery of Pizza Hut on Muddy Branch Road
Police were alerted to a hold-up in progress at a Pizza Hut by a customer who had called the restaurant to place an order and was told the restaurant was being robbed. Gaithersburg Patch posted the initial story that Gaithersburg Police were investigating an armed robbery at the Pizza Hut at 299 Muddy Branch Road on Wednesday. Montgomery County Police later said in a statement at its news blog: At approximately 1:43 p.m. police received a call from a woman who had called the Pizza Hut to order a pizza.
