Black Bear Caught On Cell Phone Video

Montgomery Community Media: A black bear spent more than 40 minutes on the deck of a Gaithersburg resident who caught it on tape.

A black bear spotted Thursday morning on the deck of a Gaithersburg home on Hartley Place was caught on video by the homeowner, Montgomery Community Media reported.

The bear has been spotted in Gaithersburg's Kentlands and Quince Orchard neighborhoods, along with in the area of Twelve Oaks Drive and Clopper Road.

It has been seen as far north as Germantown. A map of bear sightings can be viewed on Gaithersburg Patch.

Additional photos of the bear are available on Montgomery Community Media.

Gaithersburg police officer Dan Lane told Patch it's not uncommon to see bears out during this time of year.

"They are 2-year-old bears, and when they reach this age that's when they branch off from the den," Lane said. "It's not uncommon to find them this far away from their natural habitat."
