Gaithersburg Mayor Ponders Run for County Council

Mayor Sidney Katz has held elective office for more than three decades, says he'll make a decision in January.

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz is considering running for Montgomery County Council.

Montgomery County Community Media was the first to report the story. Katz recently closed his family’s business, Wolfson’s Department Store in Olde Town Gaithersburg. He told MyMCMedia that he started thinking about running for the District 3 seat after closing the store because people kept suggesting it “over and over again.”

Katz, a Gaithersburg native, has held elective office for more than three decades. He’s been mayor since 1998 and served on the Gaithersburg City Council from 1978 up until his election as mayor.

Katz said in an interview with The Gazette that he wouldn’t make a decision until January.

But if he runs, he would face competition from Gaithersburg City Councilman Ryan Spiegel, who has already said he plans to seek the District 3 seat.
