Art Reception at The Artists' Gallery in Frederick

Opening reception of PORTRAITS OF PERU by Montgomery Village abstract artist Linda Sherman

EXHIBIT OPEN THE MONTH OF JULY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY SUNDAY, FROM 12-5

During her third solo exhibit at the Artists’ Gallery, Sherman reflects on her experiences during a spring trip to Peru and Equador. “I was particularly interested in the evolution of the Incan  culture and how it combined with and adjusted to the Spanish customs and religion forced upon it in the early 1500s,” Sherman says.  “Visually, I was fascinated with their symbology, the creativity of their pottery, and the incredible craftsmanship of their stonework.”
Sherman’s paintings are abstractions of what she learned and saw and make liberal use of Andean symbols and line work.

“I try to capture a feeling as opposed to representing my experience literally,” she said.  “I think about a subject, look at my photos, then try to empty my head, letting the act of painting tell me what to do as opposed to forcing my will on it. My paintings tend to be successful if I am able to let go.”
