Crown Developers Share Plan For Community Rec Center

Developers for Gaithersburg's Crown development unveiled early plans for a 2.3 acre community and recreation center at Monday evening's mayor and City Council meeting.

As part of a public hearing with the City Council and Planning Commission, SunBrook Partners Vice President Bobby Zeiller explained plans for a facility to include a club house, swimming pool, tennis courts and more.

"This is an exciting project for us...it's one that will be shared by everyone who lives there and the surrounding community," Zeiller said.

The plan proposes a main building between 4,800 and 7,500 square feet, with a maximum height of four stories, according to city documents.

The proposed swimming pools will be between 6,000 and 8,500 square feet, with a multi-purpose court, tot-lot, passive green area and paths also included on the grounds, according to the city.

"We viewed this particular structure with great significance," Zeiller said. "We think it needs to recognize Crown's healthy, active and sustainable lifestyle."

Among the city's early concerns was the issue of parking. There are plans for an on-site parking lot with approximately 170 spaces, but Council Vice President Mike Sesma said it might not be enough for times when the community and recreation center hosts large events, such as Wednesday night or Saturday morning swim meets.

Matt Bell, of EE&K Architect, said the facility's parking will be supplemented by garages in multiple parts of the Crown neighborhood, which are a short walk from the proposed community and recreation center.

The City Council and Planning Commission are holding the public record open for comment until Thursdays, March 21 and March 14, respectively.
